I seem to recall Niven immediately went back to England and re-enlisted immediately war was declared.

Indeed he did. His background was military anyway; and various researchers have found he was anything but a desk jockey. Niven himself never spoke about his war experiences, because he said too many died for him to use it as a celebrity thing.

Yep, went through Sandhurst.
Touched on them in his autobiography but didn;t go into detail.

I did like one quote attributed to him though. That before he led his men into battle he's supposed to have said something along the lines of "It's alright for you, you only have to do this once. I have to do it again with Errol Flynn".

Technically a British film- but the cricket jumper seen in the famous man lady scene in the Crying Game is a good'un.

IIRC, I think Forrest Whitaker rolls his arm over (unconvincingly) in a cricket-based dream sequence/flashback/something (it's been a while since I saw The Crying Game. You only need to see it once - not really a rewatcher).
Re: Cricket references in non-cricket (OK, mostly US) culture
Anyone seen a cricket reference in this forum lately...?

"The West Wing" even talks about 'sticky wickets' in earlier episodes.
And the ref to Niven and Flynn was of the alleged variety.

I played an impromptu game of cricket on the streets of Tokyo about a month back. We nearly hit a cab with the ball, and the Japanese were clearly shocked and not ready for such impulsiveness, but we pulled it off.
