Shoeshine wrote:Yes, he was OK. But it was frightening. No helmet, and I really drilled it - it ricocheted out to deep extra cover off his head. He went to hospital for a scan, and all was fine. Fortunately it was on the side of the head behind the ear, so a thick part of the skull.
Fark!
Glad he was ok - don't wear a lid myself very often, that sort of thing does make you think though.
Had to take evasive action myself a couple of weeks back when I had one drilled back at me . . . although it was my knackers that were in danger on that occasion. Just managed to get out of the way, though not very gracefully . . . much to everyone's amusement!

Re: Favourite Scorecard
I think we're pretty much the last generation who go without wearing a helmet. More or less anyone in their twenties and younger puts one on nowadays.
Of course, that can lead to trouble - as when facing a seriously fast and nasty Pakistan A bowler who I hadn't expected, because having gone out without one on, I was buggered if I was going to call for it when I'm out there.

In a game I was umpiring last year a young pom fresh off the plane asked me if he was allowed to bat without a helmet ...I advised him he was ...but only if he wanted the bowlers to start aiming at his head
Fast bowler logic

True enough. However, as a left handed opener, I absolutely dream of bowlers being stupid enough to bowl short at me*.

Once heard Jim Laker describe this match to Peter West during a rain break in a Test many years ago:
http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/21/21320.html
Must be very close to the record for the lowest score to have won by an innings. The Oval must have been a complete cabbage patch in the 50s. No wonder they won 7 CC titles in a row.

It must have rained you would think. Uncovered pitches in those days.

Declaring on 92/3?!
Good Slurrey side that though.

Re: Favourite Scorecard
Not forgetting Arthur MacIntyre, currently England's oldest Test cap and Peter Loader who took a hat-trick against the Windies in 1957, a feat that was not repeated by an England bowler for another 38 years. 8 of the Surrey team were past, present or future Test players.
The declaration which, according to Laker, caught the Surrey players, some of whom had gone to their homes near the Oval, completely by surprise, shows both what an aggressive captain Surridge was and what a cow pat the Oval wicket must have been (also, 1954 was a particularly atrocious summer by all accounts). I remember Laker saying that whilst the close catching with players like MacIntyre, Stewart, Surridge and Barrington was outstanding Surrey were pretty ordinary outfielders, May being the exception, Bernie Constable had an arthritic knee and so could only field close to the wicket. Seems as if they didn't need to do much outfielding, though.

The other point to note was that it had rained heavily on the previous day after Worcester had started to bat and those were the days of uncovered pitches and so the wicket would have been completely soaked both during the rain break and overnight. Surrey had the perfect attack to take advantage of a drying pitch so Surridge obviously thought why waste time batting when he could get the game over with and earn a day off and he was proved totally correct.

First triple century I ever saw, I was only 14 and saw every ball. Was magic.
Edit: Was also memorable because the Extras nearly got a century. That scorecard says 98 but I'm 99% certain that it was 99 extras scored.

This one's pretty cool, Oval 1992: amazing England team, had Gooch, Gower, Athers, Smith and Rampers, Tuffers one of the bowlers; Pak had the 2 Ws and Mushy helping them to win the Test by 10 wickets:

Unremarkable defeat of a pants English side by a reasonable Pak side.
As I recall the Lord's Test in the same series, however, was worthy of comment.
England were on the brink of victory until Wasim and Waqar stole it for Pak . . . with the bat!

That series was a bit of a mismatch - IDK Salisbury and a fat Botham at least 5 years past it v the two W's
