They really don't make them like they used to do they? Had a bit of a Clint day with a few mates today though was more of a Man With No Name/Dirty Harry day. We finished with For a Few Dollars More as we are all in agreement that it's the best film he ever did.

Very few films in recent memory come even close to matching the epicness of the ending. Truly godlike filmaking, thanks in large part to the legendary score by Ennio Morricone.

Chinatown.

Not that that has anything to do with Clint. But if we're listing relatively old movies that are a touch of class...

For any post-modern noir fans: The Long Goodbye (1973) with Elliot Gould as Robert Marlowe.

Do you mean Philip Marlowe? I'm sure this film was based on the Raymond Chandler novel.

Even new movies will be old one day. It's all in the eye of the beholder I guess.

But I must say I did expect this thread to be dealing with films more in the vintage of Casablanca.

Not that there's anything wrong with Clint worship. May he keep making movies into his 90s.

That's one of my all-time favourites. I can't really tell you why I like it so much though. It just kind of has a magnetic appeal for me.

I must have seen the first time when I was about 15. Left an impression for some reason.

I watched Shawshank last night for the first time ever. I enjoyed it but was maybe expecting too much cos everyone says how great it is. Could've done to be an hour less!

Three oldies that come to mind are;
Twelve Angry Men, with Henry Fonda.
To Kill a Mockingbird, with Gregory Peck.
Shenandoh, with James Stewart.

The movie about the movie (Apocalypse Now) was better, so I think you've tied all three movies together quite well Merls.

David Lean's 1946 version of 'Great Expectations'. One of the greatest films ever made. Great direction, acting, adeptation. There simply is'nt any weak points.

The Victorians (no, not nath this time) have a fark of a lot to answer for . . . but as most films reduce themselves to nothing but a load of sentimental pap, I guess it is the perfect medium for Dickens. If he had lived 100 years later he would have directed "A League of their own" . . . .

Dickens is all right.

Some old movies I like are some of Hitchcock's thrillers including Rear Window, Rebecca and Vertigo.

I'm, also partial to The Third Man and A Touch of Evil.
