Mamparra of the week
This is an actual award given by the local Sunday Times. Recipients are usually not too happy about it. The origins of "mamparra" are obscure - but depending on the language it is thought to have come from, it may refer to a lower form of life or a lower part of the anatomy. (Front or back again depending on origin.)
This guy must be a prime candidate...
Hard to believe that it hasn't occurred to him that spending a few hundred rands on attending one or two sports matches may be rather more informative than splurging billions on surveys among people who either know the answer already or can't give a damn. Then again, his party has been known to spend more on the parties launching new health care facilities than on the buildings themselves...

Appearing to be clever by renaming things instead of mending them. Passed by some brand new "OR Tambo Airport" and "City of Tshwane" signs that are already threatening to fall into the yawning potholes in the roads on which they have been erected.

Re: Mamparra of the week
Weird thing is that here (and, as you pointed out, in many other countries) voters are willing to accept as presidents and cabinet ministers people whose academic qualifications wouldn't get them jobs as pizza delivery men, and who would have been forced on grounds of age to retire if they'd been filing clerks or typists.doremi wrote:Don't fret, it's the same everywhere.

Jake White for Minister of Sport
Sadly, we still have Stofile. Some of the comments of people who are, presumably, registered voters in many cases tell us why...
