This is the most important West Indian domestic tournament in years as the senior players have all made themselves available for this tournament due to the WICB's directive that they have to play in order to be eligible to tour Australia. So true to form, the WICB failed to get a sponsor and have chosen to fit the entire tournament into one week. They have also refused T & T permission to play their first match on Thursday, meaning that the T & T 20/20 heroes are in a race against time to get to Guyana in time for the first match. Normally I would support T & T, but as the Under 19's are taking part in preparation for the Under 19 World Cup I will be supporting them. Look out for 16 year old Kraigg Braithwaite who just can't stop scoring runs at every level he has played so far.

Nelon Pascal is seriously quick when fully fit, definitely 90mph. Keon Joseph of the Under 19 team is meant to be seriously quick but we will just have to wait and see. Jason Holder is only brisk pace at 17 years old but he is 6 feet 7 inches tall and has some seriously good fast bowling attributes.

Unfortunately it is being played in Guyana so the pitches will be flat and evenly paced at best, slow and low at worst.

You should really be supporting the students as they have Gavin Wallace in their team (Jamaica just wont pick him unfortunately).

Yep if the selectors and management team choose the right team this tour of Australia could be very exciting. Those 3 seriously quick bowlers, any spinner other than Benn and Barath opening the batting.

Yep exactly the right team. It seems very simple doesn't it? Lets see what the selectors come up with after this Regional Limited Overs series.

The tournament started today. Unfortunately Gayle and Jerome Taylor are not playing as they have flu.

The West Indies Under 19 are 26/0 so far which is infinitely better than the 18 all out they managed last time they faced Barbados Very Happy

Windies Under 19 made 171/6 from their 40 overs (reduced by rain). 17 year old Evin Lewis made 53, 16 year old Kraigg Braithwaite 48.

That is not bad going on a slow pitch at Bourda against a bowling attack including Kemar Roach, Tino Best, Suliemann Benn and Dwayne Smith.

We do seem to have a ridiculous number of young leg spinners nowadays. It's just a shame that West Indian selectors don't understand spin bowling very well.

The battle of the spinners so far (will update as we progress, but bare in mind how favourable the conditions are for spinners):

Slow Left Armers

Suliemann Benn - 8 Overs, 1/47
Nikitta Miller - 9 Overs, 2/28
Kavesh Kantasingh - 9 Overs, 3/22
Veerasammy Permaul - 9 Overs, 1/23

Off spinners

Sherwin Ganga - 4 Overs, 1/13
Patrick Harty - 7 Overs, 1/28
Ryan Austin - 9 Overs, 2/42
Shane Shillingford - 9 Overs, 2/20
Royston Crandon - 10 Overs, 3/56
Narsingh Deonarine - 8 Overs, 1/15
Justin Athaneze - 10 Overs, 3/36

Leg Spinners

Gavin Wallace - 8 Overs, 0/34
Davendra Bishoo - 10 Overs, 2/38
Odean Brown - 9 Overs, 2/39
Akeem Dewar - 8 Overs, 3/25
Samuel Badree - 9 Overs, 0/9
Anthony Martin - 3 Overs, 0/20

Left Arm Chinaman

Dave Mohammed - 9 Overs, 3/25

Bishoo has an almost unreadable googly but needs to work on his leg breaks. The Sri Lankans were very impressed with him when they last visited Guyana as they couldn't read him at all.

Gavin Wallace spins the ball miles but is being badly treated by the Jamaican selectors and thus has opted to play for CCC.

Akeem Dewar is an interesting one as apparently he is very tall and spins the ball a fair bit.

Too much fuggin rain in Guyana today. Leeward Islands v Windies Under 19, Windward Islands v T & T and Jamaica v CCC were all abandoned.

The 1 result was at Albion, where over 10,000 people came to watch Guyana take on Barbados (cricket is dead in the Caribbean apparently:D

Barbados: 231/9 (Suliemann Benn 39, Khaled Springer 35, Davendra Bishoo 3/30, Veerasammy Permaul 3/54)

Guyana: 236/3 (Narsingh Deonarine 102 not out (79 balls), Travis Dowlin 39, Shivnarine Chanderpaul 38 not out, Ramnaresh Sarwan 33)

Guyana won by 7 wickets with 7 Overs to spare

Well all of the 3rd round matches were abandoned without a ball being bowled. The WICB have scheduled no reserve days at all and so the semi-finals to be played are:

T & T v Barbados (Monday)

Guyana v CCC (Tuesday)

So Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands and Windies Under 19 are eliminated on the basis of 1 match. This is meant to be the premier One Day tournament in the West Indies. If the selectors are forced to select the squad to tour Australia based on this tournament then the pickings are very slim.

After a rather dry "rainy season" since June, rain has appeared with a vengeance since Wednesday; torrential rain every day for large parts of the day.

Strange time of year to hold a major cricketing event in these parts ....no?

Completely inexplicable! You know what, as you are in the Caribbean, do you fancy a change of career? You seem to have more of a grip on basic meteorology than our cricket administrators!

Make a sentence out of these words and you get the WICB: 'A piss up, organise, in a brewery, cant'.

It's the first semi-final today, and it isn't raining. Barbados won the toss and elected to bat.

Barbados also continue their amazing ability to make all the wrong cricketing decisions. They have dropped Kemar Roach and Tino Best against a team that struggles against extreme pace but is very good against medium pace and spin.

Yeah we have a load of them but the problem is they don't have to bowl that well to take wickets because batsmen from the Leeward Islands, WIndward Islands and Barbados are so awful against spin.

It's about spotting how much they spin and flight the ball and Davendra Bishoo and Gavin Wallace are easily on top of the pile in that regard.
