* June 25, 2010 11:12AM

TASMANIAN Tigers cricket selector Glenn Hughes will face trial in a Perth court in October on sexual assault charges.

Hughes has pleaded not guilty to two charges of sexual penetration without consent following an incident at a Perth hotel in October last year.

In the District Court in Perth today, the 50-year-old appeared via video link from Hobart to hear that his four-day trial would start on October 11.

Judge Allan Fenbury extended Hughes' bail.

The former Tasmanian Sheffield Shield cricketer and younger brother of former Test captain Kim Hughes was stood down from the three-man Tasmanian selection panel immediately after being charged in Perth in December.

Hughes, a right-handed batsman, scored 2244 runs in 35 Sheffield Shield matches for Tasmania after moving from Western Australia in the 1980s.

.Former cricketer Glenn Huges on rape trial in Perth court Angie Raphael From: AAP October 12, 2010 7:05AM

A WOMAN who says she was raped by a former cricketer has told a Perth court the attack left her feeling like she had been "ripped in two".
In Perth's District Court on Monday, Glenn Hughes, 50, pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual penetration without consent.

The court heard that Hughes was working as a Tasmanian Tigers cricket selector in October 2008 when he met a 47-year-old woman on a flight from Melbourne to Perth.

The pair began a sexual relationship but the woman did not know for several months that Hughes was already in a long-term relationship.

The single mother of three continued the affair after learning the truth and the pair regularly met in Hobart, Perth, Newcastle and Sydney.

The woman said that in October 2009, she was supposed to meet up with Hughes in Perth but when he failed to confirm the plans she cancelled her flight.

The woman said Hughes called her and was upset, saying he ``didn't need this'' and hung up on her.

She said they made up after a few phone calls and had phone sex before she flew to Perth to meet him.

She booked a room at the Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough and invited him to join her.

The woman graphically described how Hughes allegedly forced her to have sexual intercourse with her multiple times against her wishes.

The woman said she told Hughes that he was hurting her, but he ignored her protest.

``His eyes were glassy (and) they were bloodshot,'' she said.

``It was like an entirely different person.''

She said she begged him to stop but he ignored her protests.

``It was very aggressive and he is very strong,'' she said.

"I felt as if I had been ripped in two.''

After the second attack, the woman said Hughes told her she should be ``happy''.

She said she noticed blood on the bed and went to the hospital where she was treated.

Earlier, Hughes' lawyer told the jury his client thought the sexual intercourse was consensual.

Hughes is a former Sheffield Shield cricketer and Tasmanian coach and younger brother of former Test captain Kim Hughes.

He has been released on bail during the trial on a $20,000 surety and is under home detention.

The trial continues.

A FORMER state cricketer charged with raping a woman has told a Perth court she was the one "guiding'' him during the sex.
Glenn Hughes, 50, has pleaded not guilty in the Perth District Court to two counts of sexual penetration without consent.

His 47-year-old former lover laid a complaint against him in October 2009 after he allegedly raped her in a hotel room.

In court yesterday, a video was shown of Hughes being interviewed by detectives from the sex assault squad after he was arrested.

In the video, Hughes told police the sex was consensual.

"I just can't understand the complaint,'' he said.

"I never heard her say, 'No, stop it' at any stage.''

Watching the video in court, Hughes appeared visibly upset and uncomfortable, shedding tears as he watched himself explain the graphic details of their love affair.

In giving his evidence in court, Hughes said the woman was in control of the sex.

"She was doing all the guiding,'' he said.

When his lawyer asked if she ever protested, cried, begged or pleaded with him to stop, Hughes said: "No, never.''

The court heard earlier that Hughes was a Tasmanian Tigers cricket selector in October 2008 when he met the woman on a flight from Melbourne to Perth.

The pair began a 12-month sexual relationship but the woman did not know for several months that Hughes was already in a long-term relationship.

The single mother of three continued the affair after learning the truth, and the pair later met in Hobart, Perth, Newcastle and Sydney.

The woman told the court that in October 2009 she flew to Perth and invited Hughes to join her at a hotel room she had booked.

She said she explained they could not have sexual intercourse because she had begun menstruating during the flight to Perth.

Instead she gave him oral sex and then they had sex, although she said she found it uncomfortable.

She said later in the evening he pinned her to the bed and "rammed'' himself inside her.

The woman said she told Hughes he was hurting her because he was pushing her tampon deeper inside her, but he ignored her protest.

The woman said she was shaking and crying when Hughes got up to have a shower, which he denied.

She said when he returned, he pushed her onto the bed and penetrated her anus, ignoring her protests for him to stop.

The woman said she later noticed blood on the bed and went to a hospital where she was treated.

She said she would never consent to anal sex or sex when she was menstruating.

But in his interview with police, Hughes said the couple had previously discussed anal sex on the phone and had agreed to try it.

Hughes said that after they had sex the woman asked him to help her remove the tampon because it was stuck inside her.

"I thought it would just come out naturally,'' he said.

"I explained I don't know what to do about those things.''

While giving evidence in court, Hughes admitted some of the facts he told police in the interview were inaccurate because he had had eight beers beforehand.

He said he felt "flustered'' and thought the police were trying to "entrap'' him by asking the same question in several ways although they did explain his rights to him.

"My whole life had gone under the gurgler,'' he told the court.

He said he was concerned at the time that the woman might tell his partner about their affair.

Hughes is a former Tasmanian Sheffield Shield cricketer and younger brother of former Test captain and WA cricket legend Kim Hughes.

The jury is expected to deliberate on the matter today.

Hughes not guilty of rape Lloyd Jones
October 15, 2010

Glenn Hughes is standing trial for rape.

A former state cricketer found not guilty of raping a woman in a Perth hotel room says he never doubted his innocence.

Glenn Hughes, 50, who has been stood down as a Tasmanian cricket selector, faced trial in Perth's District Court on two counts of sexual penetration without consent.

After six hours of deliberation on Friday, a jury of seven men and five women found him not guilty on both counts.

Mr Hughes, dressed in a grey suit and open-necked blue shirt, put his head back and let out a sigh of relief after the jury foreman returned the verdicts.

A complaint against Mr Hughes was laid in October 2009 by his 47-year-old former lover, who alleged he had raped her in a Perth hotel room during a 12-month affair.

Mr Hughes told the court he believed the sex was consensual and at no stage did he hear the woman ask him to stop.

Outside court the former Tasmanian Sheffield Shield cricketer and brother of former Test captain Kim Hughes told reporters he was happy with the justice system and the unanimous verdicts.

He said he wanted to thank his family and friends who had stood by him.

''I never had any doubt of my innocence,'' he said.

''I look forward to continuing my life going forward.''

Mr Hughes said the accusations against him and the loss of reputation had been hard to take.

''The stress, the pain, a good way to lose weight, about 15 kilos over a year,'' he said.

Mr Hughes said that on Friday night he looked forward to having ''a couple of quiet beers with my brother and family''.

His lawyer David Manera said he hoped Cricket Tasmania and the ABC, where he had worked as a commentator, would put the matter behind them and resume Mr Hughes's employment.

''The trial over the last year has taken an enormous toll on Glenn in every aspect of his life, personally and professionally,'' Mr Manera said.

''It is an enormous relief to Glenn and his friends and family that this is all over.''
