Josh Carney wrote:Flintoff was still hampered with his fitness issues. Anderson did better than expected but he is no ODI specialist, with his swing he is more suited to tests.
Actually, if you look at Andersons record in both forms of the game, you'll find his ODI record is vastly superior to his Test record.
Anyway, it's besides the point. India LOST that series, and was it Tendulkars fault? No. He was the leading Indian batsman. If Englands attack was so 'sub standard', then surely every other Indian batsman who didnt do as well as Tendulkar should more likely be dropped?

He has been hampered by fitness issues for quite some years now. FYI, he averaged 14 in that series.Josh Carney wrote:Flintoff was still hampered with his fitness issues.

How bad is a sub standard England attack?

Yep, bring back Sanjay Bangar and Akash Chopra in Indian ODI team.Josh Carney wrote:Both should go IMO.Henry wrote:Imo Ganguly should still be on thin ice. Yes, he averages close to 50 since his recall, but his fielding gets worse by the match, and a John Deere tractor can turn quicker than him.

Do you really think that those two would be better than Tendulkar and Ganguly ?SG wrote:Yep, bring back Sanjay Bangar and Akash Chopra in Indian ODI team.Josh Carney wrote:Both should go IMO.Henry wrote:Imo Ganguly should still be on thin ice. I did not say it was Tendulkar's fault. Just pointing out that he scored against an attack which was say relatively weaker in comparison to the Ashes winning attack of Jones, Harmi and a fit Flintoff.Henry wrote:Josh Carney wrote:Flintoff was still hampered with his fitness issues. Yep, Eng would've played that attack forever in all forms of the game.Ashes winning attack of Jones, Harmi and a fit Flintoff.
BTW, how many ODIs have Jones and Harmi played so that you've formed an opinion on them to be world beaters in ODIs?

Well not really. Test cricket and ODI cricket are two totally different things. Harmi and Jones both have very poor ODI records. When Flintoff was playing, the attack that Tendulkar faced was just about England's full strength ODI attack. In fact, the main reason why England beat India was because of England's new ball bowling, imo.

They should be, since they seem to be hard workers, dour batsmen, low S/r, what else do you want in a batsman?Josh Carney wrote:Do you really think that those two would be better than Tendulkar and Ganguly ?SG wrote:Yep, bring back Sanjay Bangar and Akash Chopra in Indian ODI team.Josh Carney wrote:Both should go IMO.Henry wrote:Imo Ganguly should still be on thin ice. At this stage of his career Tendulkar appears to truggle against bowlers who can touch the 90 + K mark whether it is tests or ODI.

But he has always performed better in ODIs. He's the English version of Agarkar.

josh talking about tendulkar is like prakash karat talking about capitalism. he know he doesnt like him, is convinced his reasoning is logical, but everyone else is just bemused
if he seriously believes tendulkar is not amongst india's top 6-7 odi batsmen then i guess he follows his cricket in gossip magazines

I'd say Tendulkar is currently 2nd best ODI bat in India.

Dhoni's ODI form has not been upto mark in last few series, especially post WC.
With him contributing a little more with bat, we could've won quite a few close ODIs we lost in this period.

It might surprise you that I was an ardent Tendulkar supporter till about 99 and even used to defend vigorously the "choker" type criticisms. After his home and Sharjah performances against OZ I used to think that he was one of the best things to happen to Indian Cricket. The One wrote:josh talking about tendulkar is like prakash karat talking about capitalism. he know he doesnt like him, is convinced his reasoning is logical, but everyone else is just bemused

Everything / Everybody has their limitations and run past their use-by date. That is the problem Indian fans tend to have grappling with, be it film stars or cricketers or politicians.doremi wrote:Well you are right. He is one of the best things to have happened to Indian cricket.

if you talk about 'indian cricket' he is easily the biggest and best thing to happen to it. we had great players like gavaskar and dev who made india believe they could stand up to batsmen and bowlers of other countries, but tendulkar gave us the pleasure of having the best in the world taking on the rest of the world with aggression and winning quite a few battles. being the best batsman in the world from 1994-2004 was no mean feat. of course with the post 91 economy and television he became india's biggest star and led to an explosion of interest in cricket
ask any indian cricketer post 1995 who their idol is and they would name tendulkar. he is akin to what bradman did for australia, what imran did for pakistan

Re: India v Pakistan, 1st ODI, Guwahati, 5th Nov
Tests: From
Dravid, Viru, Rohit Sharma, Tiwary, Badrinath, Dhoni, karthick, Jaffer & Kaif
ODI: From
Uthappa, Rohit Sharma, Tiwary, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Viru, Badrinath, supplemented by Karthick & Kaif. Based on recent performances Tendulkar and Ganguly are a shoe in but I rule them out with the future in consideration and the need to build the kind of team spirit that was evident in the 20-20 matches.
I am sure there are other youngsters in the domestic scene who should get the nod. Just not close to it at this stage.
