Roach and Gayle to be the Wozzie Big Bashers

Warriors to get Double Dose of Caribbean Crush

29/03/2010

The Western Australian Cricket Association has confirmed the signing of West Indies duo Chris Gayle and Kemar Roach for the Retravision Warriors’ 2010-11 KFC Twenty20 Big Bash campaign.

Gayle returns to Perth after playing two matches for the Warriors in last summer’s Big Bash, while fast bowler Roach will take part in the Australian interstate Twenty20 competition for the first time.

30-year old Gayle showed a glimpse of his awesome power with the willow in the Warriors’ opening KFC Big Bash fixture against the West End Redbacks at the WACA Ground, blasting 40 from just 16 deliveries until he was forced to retire hurt due to an injured side muscle.

His assault on the South Australians came less than a fortnight after he smashed a 70-ball century in the 3 mobile Test Match against Australia in Perth, which included a towering six off spinner Nathan Hauritz which landed on the roof of the Lillee Marsh Stand.

Roach, 21, rose to prominence in the past 12 months as the stand-out bowler for the Windies in their home Test and limited-overs series against Bangladesh midway through 2009.

He also impressed with his performances on the three-Test tour of Australia later in the year, which included striking Ricky Ponting with a fearsome blow to the elbow during the WACA Test Match, forcing the Aussie skipper to retire hurt.

Roach has also been heavily sought in the shortest forms of the game, and was one of the high profile players snapped up in the IPL-3 auction, heading to reigning champions Deccan Chargers.

WACA Chief Executive Officer Graeme Wood says he looks forward to welcoming both Chris and Kemar to Perth next summer.

“The KFC Twenty20 Big Bash competition continues to grow in profile and stature and we have seen the benefits that all states have gained from quality international recruits,” Wood said.

“In Chris Gayle we have secured one of the game’s best Twenty20 players for the second successive season, while Kemar Roach is one of the most promising young paceman in world cricket, and this was evident when he became a greatly sought after player at the recent IPL-3 auctions.

“Chris Gayle was adopted as a Western Australian despite injury ruining his campaign with the Retravision Warriors in the 2009-10 KFC Big Bash, and I have no doubt that he will be very keen to repay that loyalty to the WA public when he returns later this year.

“Just as he did last summer, he brings an exciting mix of considerable Twenty20 experience, as well as significant leadership to the Warriors’ playing group.

“It has been extremely disappointing to miss out on the opportunity to compete at the first two Champions League Twenty20 tournaments, and we strongly believe that with Chris and Kemar added to the exciting local talent in the Warriors’ squad, we can give ourselves a great chance of qualifying for the 2011 edition.

“WACA Members and WA cricket supporters will have the chance to witness the Retravision Warriors playing in three home KFC Twenty20 Big Bash games at the WACA Ground in 2010-11, and it will again be one of the hottest tickets in town over the summer months.”

The 2010-11 KFC Twenty20 Big Bash schedule and all other interstate fixtures will be released by Cricket Australia in due course.

And although this has been mentioned in the 'Tool of a Tournament' thread,in the hope that it will stop those who don't RTFS from doing it - the NOD Cup has been branded the Ryobi Cup.

Banjos currently making a bit of an @rse of an effort to chase down the Tozzies 250-odd. Sitting at 8-186 in the 39th.

Late charge by Banjos. They need 28 off 2 overs with 1 wicket in hand.

Drew snuffs out a stellar effort by the last 2 Qlders. They fall just 5 short with one ball remaining. Pretty good game.

Well two halves seemed to make eff all difference to the total. Each innings was played in two halves - no?

250 is hardly earth-shattering. If 160 to 180 is considered a good T20 total, then 300 shouldn't have been hard to achieve.

I don't see the point of it. If they want it to be more entertaining, then surely both teams should have all 10 wickets again for their second innings?

The only plus I can see is that it evens out the conditions - but having wildly varying conditions between the 2 innings isn't all that common.

The big minus is that if the team batting second collapse in their first dig then the game is over as a contest incredibly early and makes the whole thing even more tedious
