Re: Football World Cup 2010 Thread (II)
If the Slovakia v Italy match and the Paraguay v NZ match both finish as draws with the same score, then Italy and NZ would be tied for second in their group, with the only way to separate them under FIFA rules as a coin toss.

Still, on current form, it's just as hard to see NZ beating (or even drawing) with the fluent Paraguayans as it is to see Aus beating Serbia and expecting either Ghana to beat Germany or Germany to smash Ghana by enough to get Aus through.

It wasn't exactly likely that NZ would take a lead against Italy, and that the Azzurri would require a penalty to level the scores before that match.
I'd put more money on NZ going through than Aus going through if I were so inclined.

Also, we had a totally legitimate goal denied at the end while that English ref was in his crazy stage.

spain are too wasteful to make an impact. needed the goal of the tournament and a deflection to put away an average honduras side. should have boosted the GD as it might come down to 3 teams on 6 points (harsh, whoever goes out).
navas cant cross and busquets and co look clueless when xavi isnt around pulling the strings. just pass it around aimlessly. ramos and villa were the only players showing any urgency.
hard to look past brazil or holland imo. argentinas defence will get found out against the better teams.
the best thing about this world cup is that most the teams are playing decent open football and the ones that arent are struggling to get through.

After finally starting to qualify for the world cup on a consistent basis, I guess it's no surprise that the Aussie fans are able to take ref whingeing to a whole new level.

I looked up Graham Poll on Wiki and it actually makes reference to the fact that he missed the fact that Harry Kewell was offside when he scored the equaliser that got us through. I certainly don't remember it that way.JGK wrote:G.Wood wrote:It was 2-2 and it was the qualifying for Rd 2 that was the excitin bit

It also says that his excuse for the triple yellow card fiasco was that he marked the Croat no. 3 down as an Aussie ("Poll also stated that he had erred in his initial booking of Å imunić, marking his card with the correct number (3) but in the wrong column; effectively noting it against Australia's Craig Moore."). Oh dear.

He was offside (similar to the way Smeltz was v the Italians) but offsides are linesman's call not the ref's so whoever wrote wiki was a bitter croat or trev

Under FIFA rules it's a regulation sending off ...but most Ozzies only follow soccer for the World Cup and the final qualification game and cant be bothered reading every rule ...and all we can see is its a very harsh penalty for a 'non deliberate no physical harm act' ...

Just read the last few pages and am wondering what an Aussie has done to him to make Henry such a bitter qunt??
Perhaps he was knocked back by an Aussie priest during his altar boy days?

Hehehe, we've known Trev for years. He goes back to the ABC forum days and, yes, has always been a bitter qunt towards all things Aus. In them days he'd post any negative article about Aus that he could find - a bit like Red does now with SAf.

Re: Football World Cup 2010 Thread (II)
I would just like to interject here and say I am an Australian who has been following the game of football/soccer for years now. With the hundreds of resulting games i have watched i would just like to point out never have I seen officials make such harsh and varied decisions in games which Australia is involved in. To give a straight red in both games you have to admit was uncalled for but to simply give yellow cards and harsh talking toos for tackles Ghana committed that, I'm saw you agree, would lead to over a 3 match suspension in the EPL is just uncalled for.
Also we are allowed to bitch about soccer because all you pom bastards do when you get over here is complain about how livable Australian conditions are. Another reason is why don't you pompous assholes go get yourself into another war against Germany so we can send you another 100,000 Australian troops for you to use as cannon fodder....

Welcome aboard, llamas3.
Bitch away, ol' son. It's all good.
The ref in the Chile-Switzerland game was an embarrassment to FIFA.
