Question for fellow Britons!
When we finally dump the monarchy, what do we reckon to this as the national anthem?
Very much a British song rather than an English one.
With the added bonus of the lovely Ms Jenkins

Re: Question for fellow Britons!
Not a little too Victorian? Certainly a lovely tune, but does it represent Britain as it now exists?

Re: Question for fellow Britons!
You mean like France & Germanys does?
Nothing wrong with the lyrics IMO, nothing overtly religious in it, or colonial.
I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays 'pon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

Overstated, soppy, rubbish IMO. We may as well go for James Blunt's 'Your Beautiful' -
"I saw your meadows, on a wet sunday afternoon, and I don't know what to do. It's a pity they're covered with sheep poo".
I nominate "Paint it Black" by the Stones. Or "Lovely Rita". Or perhaps "It's getting better all the tiiii-ime".

Jupiter is a much better tune, though.
I'd go for Jerusalem.

It's good if you want to go for tradtional and rousing.
Personally I'm with Billy Connelly and go for the Archer's theme tune.

Re: Question for fellow Britons!
Throw in the gorgeous Katherine Jenkins as the bonus and I'd willingly sign up to dump the monarchy (small m) - BUT - not to have that dirge ... ugghh ...
Jerusalem - now that's an anthem.
Somehow, however, I cannot see our PC politicians adopting it in this "multi-cultural" society that Britain is right now!
It would be considered offensive ... as the local govt in Birmingham deemed not so long back !!

Easy ... The same way as you can have one that implores God to save and give long life to a po faced "monarch" of German ancestry married to a descendant of Pythaghoras, whom together own enough land to cover half of England.
The anthem is about the Country and its people - not about its tribal ruler.

The one does not correspond to the other.
Jerusalem is an English song not a British one.

Re: Question for fellow Britons!
Prince Philip's ancestry is mainly Danish with a bit of greek.
merlin is obviously an advocate for full division of the United Kingdoms of Great Britain once he pops the Queen of her throne, Mr Lever.

Re: Question for fellow Britons!
Jerusalem's a great piece of music but I'd suggest some might find its title a tad confusing as a national anthem.

Sadly popping the queen off her throne would only open the floodgates for the rest of the half-wit incumbent leeches waiting in the wings.
Philip may have Danish ancestry dating back to the Vikings, but he was born a Greek prince, of Greek 'royalty', which of course is no more!
Spread the wealth!
Anything wrong with that?

Pray tell, how does our current anthem reflect 'Britain', when it's about one person who is "happy and glorious and victorious" ?

Nah, I'm just not patriotic in the way which I'd have anything to do with a national anthem.
