He might have pissed off Saurav Ganguly, but his decision to embrace Indian culture instead of eating baked beans in his hotel hepled improve relations with India.
Which isn't to say Steve couldn't have benefited from being more diplomatic and less of a hard-nosed bastard in general, but you take the good with the bad.

I have no problem with any Aussie captain being a hard-nosed bastard on the field. It's the ones who are qunts when they're not playing that I don't have time for.

Taylor first, Border second. Waugh and Ponting following that.
Big difference between Waugh and Ponting is that Waugh had Hayden, Gilly, Glenn and Shane for pretty much the whole time. Ponting is faced with the task of rebuilding, a bit like the early AB days except that Ponting's current team is not as bad as what AB had in the early days.

Eh? Waugh was just about the most admired captain in the game in that every other team envied what he had achieved and many (India, Saf, England) have since used that hard nosed playing model to improve their own world standing.

I can't imagine tugga getting critised by an ex-player and saying "it's hauritz's fault not mine"

Would Red Ink hunter call a batsmen back after a contentious ruling? Would he push the boundaries of the rule book?
For all the romanticism of Swore, Taylor is far superior in all aspects bar batting as captain.

Indeed. P!ssing off Gangles does not equate to a lack of diplomacy. In fact he was merely responding to Gangles' arseholedness.Hass wrote:Paul Keating wrote:Well it is also about diplomacy and fostering relations with other cricket countries and Senior Waugh lacked that!

i thought it was ganguly who pissed off waugh, not the other way round
waugh is greatly admired in india for his charity work. most indians think ponting is a qunt, but he certainly did a better job building relations on this tour than in any previous ones. one might even say that he was a bit statesman-like

Well Ponting has matured with age. I do criticise him a lot (deservedly so), but he has come a long way since being suspended for getting a black eye in Kings Cross.

Re: Did Tugga bonk Crappelli's mistress?
Ganguly and Waugh both got at each other's nerves in that VVS / Bhaji series. Ganguly however had the last laugh in that series which one assumes kept bugging Waugh.
After that when 5 Indian cricketers got pulled up in SA over various ICC offences Waugh tried to score back by passing his comments from Sydney. Ganguly responded with a "he should just shut up" from SA. Towards the end they kind of patched up with Ganguly paying a fairly generous tribute to Waugh at his farewell test.

But doesn't the commitment become void now with the allegations that the SCG test was rigged?

They are, at this stage, mere allegations.

bill hayden's drovers dog could have captained the side that Ksnr had (of course the dog would have got rid of Kjnr)...

You know, in this mixed up crazy world that sometimes feels like it is all about to descend into oblivion, there is something strangely comforting in the knowledge that whereever and whenever there is a post that praises Steve Waugh, Horrie will turn up soon after with some predictable response involving Australian fauna.

Re: Did Tugga bonk Crappelli's mistress?
Instead of comparing the personnel they had during their reign, a simpler question would be ..
Would Border/Taylor/SWaugh get better performances out of the present Aus team than Ponting? Most people would say yes.
I'd also believe other contemporary captains like Strauss/Smith/Dhoni would have done much better than Ponting with the same team.

Want to throw this into the mix. How much has the the CA crackdown and the IPL priorities taken away from the Aussies in terms of their hunger to be the best in test cricket ?

I don't think the IPL has had much of an impact but I do think that CAs betrayal of the players in the Sydney test v India has had a deep impact.

"I'd have Ponting ahead of Waugh
RICKY Ponting is a good captain; I've never seen him run out of ideas and most importantly he hasn't lost the support of his players.
There's been no sign that the Australian team isn't giving him a hundred per cent effort. If those signs were evident, it would be time for the selectors to replace him even though there would be a perception of panic with an Ashes series beckoning."
...and...
"Of the past four Australian captains, I'd rank Ponting level with Allan Border, behind Mark Taylor and ahead of Waugh.
Taylor was outstanding and Border was more adept at handling spinners than Ponting. However, Ponting is a strong-minded captain and there was a period in his early days where Border didn't want to lead.
Under the cosh, Steve Waugh used to run out of ideas and he had far better bowlers at his command than what Ponting currently possesses."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SRW was always willing to attack and try stuff outside the box, and is the most successful Aus captain bar none (for skippers with >10 Tests at the helm). Drunky is just a dill.
Crappelli seems to punch out at least one "SRW was useless" story a season. Looks like he got in early this year. Qunt.
Has anyone ever seen Horrie and Ian Chappell in the same room at the same time?
