Re: Who is the weakest link.
'Peter Toohey fetish'
You say that like it's a bad thing ...
If only the selectors had stuck with him as long as they stuck with Mark Taylor, he'd have come good. Did he come from too far out West?

No, he was just short and middling in talent. A bit like all the stand-ins in the wake of WSC.

Re: Who is the weakest link.
What in Hades was there about Peter Toohey for anybody to have a fetish about? About all I can remember about him is when he was absolutely inexplicably called back into the Test side on the morning of day 1 for the WACA game v the Poms in the first season after WSC (we wiin, Hughes 99, AB ton, Boycott carries bat for 99 on last day) to replace some guy who'd done a McGrath (maybe David Hookes), and the reason given was that he was handy, still in Perth after a Shield game...

He did score 122 and 97 in the same Test match, away in the Windies.
He looked as promising as Walters early on, with similar shotmaking capacity, but he faded abruptly and permanently with his first form slump. I think he may have broken Bobby Simpson's Grade runs record in the season before he was selected for NSW. He was by no means the worst of the batsmen called up in 1977-79. I give you Paul Hibbert, Phil Carlson, and David Ogilvie for starters.

Re: Who is the weakest link.
Link. Oh to be a fly on the wall when (as seems likely) GSC has the cojones to do what I reckon few other selectors have done and stand up to that qunt Hilditch.
I wonder now if AB's retirement, then re-appointement, then retirement again as a selector a few years back was because he got tired of trying to have his input taken on board by TQH, then was assured by someone at CA 'it'll be different this time' and then realised it was still the same.
MIKE HUSSEY'S Test career will be decided at a meeting between Australia's four selectors in two weeks and the debate over his spot for the Ashes will be fierce.
The panel led by Andrew Hilditch has always maintained a leaning towards established batsmen - their one recent gamble paying huge dividends when Shane Watson was a surprise choice as opener to replace Phillip Hughes during last year's Ashes. Greg Chappell is the new member of the panel, after Merv Hughes was axed last week, and has a reputation for introducing young blood into teams.
Hussey's selection pits the two approaches against each other and Chappell does not prescribe to the theory that players should be given final chances to prove themselves.
''We want to pick a side that can win the first Test, it is important to start the series well and in Brisbane there will more than likely be a result, so we'd much rather be 1-0 up rather than 1-0 down,'' Chappell said.

Re: Who is the weakest link.
Wouldn't suprise me in the slightest if that was the case, hopefully with GSC being a recent appointment to the position they will take note of what he says and follow it through.
