Re: Beer
Nah, he looks ordinary to me. A bunch of slogs got him a few wickets. He has 16 FC wickets in 5 games. He's dross. P!ss him off, play 4 quick plus Watto and Smith at 7.

Lucky they didn't pick Dave Pussy then.

Re: Beer
They've tried one SLA to hex the weak-against-SLA Pietersen.
Let's try another one.
If that doesn't work, the Victorian lad who got Cook out will be next in, I suppose.

Re: Beer
Wonder if he'll turn out to be better than young Sussex leg-spinner Will Beer.
Perhaps they could be facing off against each other in the next Ashes: the battle of the ales.

Re: Beer
LArdy answered your question.
The rest of us are making the best of a bad situation.
FTR - Mark Ridgeway - his coach at St Kilda for 3 years was on the radio today and the best he could say was that he was a top bloke.
We're farked if he plays.

Re: Beer
WE don't need a spinner! We need some batsmen, another captain, a juiced up deck and four or five quicks.
Or Warnie, Hados, Gilly and even Langer.

Re: Beer
TGM said he should be picked.
Hilditch said Beer would be in the XI.
Either TGM is a genius and Hilditch has finally listened.
Or TGM got sick of making serious suggestions that were ignored, took the piss, and finally got taken seriously at the moment he shouldn't have.

Re: Beer
As much as I love TGM, his Vixen bias comes to the fore in these cases. Remember, this is the guy who chose Darren Berry ahead of Steve Waugh in his top 50 players I've played with or against.

Re: Beer
Also interesting that Hildick said they spoke to people who knew him about his temprement etc. They obviously didn't speak to his first grade coach in Ridgeway or if they did, in asking about his temprement they forgot to also ask if he was actually any good.
Ridgeway said in the last couple of years when Beer had moved clubs, he never took a wicket against St Kilda because they just played him like a dibbly dobbly medium pacer and that he was the sort of bowler who probably couldn't get a wicket if the batsman didn't want to get out.
And Ridgeway is a far of Beer's!

Re: Beer
At the moment they just pick a spinner for the sake of it. Just like England picked all-rounders for the sake of it after Botham when there was nobody remotely good enough.
Having said that you can only get away with picking a 4-man all-pace attack if you're the West Indies of the 70s-80s. Although I suppose with TAYne POCson they have a 5th bowler anyway, even if opening the batting dilutes his value as a bowling option.
They're just not used to having these selection conundrums in Australia, when you have four all-time greats like Warne, McGrath, Ponting and Gilchrist and a top quality opening pair like Hayden and Langer then you could pick the other five names out of a hat and still win. Not that they needed to do that, the "lesser" players in those teams would have walked into today's side.

Still don't know whats wrong with Hauritz.
Didn't rate him much before 2009 but he had a decent if unspectacular series, is definitely test class and can bat too.

Re: Beer
The selectors dug their own grave with Hauritz when they refused to pick him for Brisbane. To recall him a couple of weeks later would be to admit they made a huge mistake. Something they're obviously not big enough to do.
Ponting hasn't helped either. He's one of the worst captains of spin bowlers i've ever seen He also seems to lose trust in his spinner very quickly. Hauritz had lost Ponting's trust completely. Doherty was actually a Ponting pick, and he's surely been even worse than Hauritz could ever be.
