Aus side for Ashes 2013?
Given that the Ashes are gone for another 2 and a half years, any thoughts on the likely make-up of the Aus XI come July 2013?

Clarke is going to have to look much better all round (incl body language and team spirit) to earn the gig?

Basically, I would think you need more Vics and Wozzies, and to fark off a lot of the Baggy Blues.

No way Klinger. Boyce is all the rage as the next big thing in the spin ranks. Not sure if Christian will be a test player. Wade could overtake Paine as the keeper. That doesn't look a squad to inspire much hope. Maybe someone like an Alex Keath will come through. Chris Lynn?

That song has something about 'The best that you can do'. Singularly inappropriate to use in any thread about Australian cricket right now.

Re: Aus side for Ashes 2013?
It's time Australia got over themselves and accepted that the admittedly incredibly fat Mark Cosgrove IS one of the best six batsmen in Australia DESPITE having played for Sheep-Shaggers Central. The guy is a proper cricketer and would successfully play in all forms of the game. He is also not a crab like every current Australian batsman.
Now, Aussie players for the future:
Mark Cosgrove (good player)
Usman Khawaja (something stolen)
Trent Copeland (silly name)
Peter George (work-horse)
Everyone else is basically rubbish.

Re: Aus side for Ashes 2013?
Siddle continues to impress. Even when he's not shining, he's trying hard and doing okay. He should be pretty much a fixture. As should Harris, if he keeps thinking and stays fit. I have to say I continue to like Hilfenhaus, even though he has been almost entirely unpenetrative this series. He is economical, willing and a good tryer.
If Oz could add another strike bowler to that mix. If not a Pidge, then maybe Brett Lee
It remains to be seen if Smith will fledge into the spinner.
The signs amidst the current batting look far less promising, to this Pom observer at least. Who knows, Clarke might yet come good again, and come into blossom. I don't like the look of him though. Looks like a pup gone bad.
Immense a servant though Hussey has been in his late-flowering international career, AD is against him.
Punter might rediscover his form and go on to make many more centuries. He looks already as if he is descending into cricketing old age though, raging against the dying of his own light.
Hughes is not Test class.
Watson will probably make a good 5 or 6, and help out with his bowling. Now that he has copped on a bit and stopped overtraining for some putative Schwarzenegger role and wrecking his body. Still too musclebound to run other than like a fatted duck though.
Oz needs to bring on its young batters fast, methinks.

Is Steve Waugh's son old enough to hold a bat yet? Do AB's son's play cricket? FFS, we need someone with some heart in their genes.

How about this mob? Any decent openers i'm not aware of? If not gonna go for a Martyn / Hayden style relaunch for young Phil Hughes. Watson isn't really an opener I don't think. Hilfenhaus is good on English wickets.

You've mistakenly put a full stop and an "English" in there.

Has done absolutely nothing so far ... so he's probably ready for his first Test

Re: Aus side for Ashes 2013?
If Clarke continues to implode the way I suspect he will, and given that Hussey and Katich will be too old, and the national selectors may continue to overlook the obvious Tasmanian leaders George Bailey and Tim Paine ... Hauritz could yet captain the side, in an Ian Johnson sort of way.
For now I'd be asking Khawaja to open for NSW with Jaques, to press his claims for that position ... and I'd simultaneously be asking Hughes to bat at 4 or 5 for NSW, as I think his only future for Australia might be at 6.

Actually, Tugga's son is a bowler I think.
