The galoot was warned that his stunt would cause trouble. There is no excuse for the rabid, murderous behaviour in Afghanistan, but it wouldn't have happened if the twit had heeded warnings as he did 6 months ago.

With police protection he can pull these show-pony stunts and make a hero of himself to his 'followers' at no personal risk, he can throw the 'freedom of speech' red herring at any attempt by the authorities to curtail him or anybody who criticises him (true, there's nothing illegal about what he's doing, it's just stupid, self-indulgent and pointless - at best).

And he can feed (and then feed off) the paranoia and ego of his 'flock' by means of that other old chestnut about 'they hate us therefore we must be doing something right', or 'just another prophet dismissed as a madman' (a fate he'd share with about 7 prophets and about 7 gazillion madmen).

I agree with Dello that the fundamentalist hothead nutcase is not "to blame" for the murderous acts of the further-incited and stupefied ignorant gang in Afghanistan.

But - like the Danish cartoons, only a lot worse - there is an element of stabbing a hornets' nest for fun. To stage a scene to provoke and inflame a response - once again. It seems also to proclaim an assumed God-given superiority of Idiot 1 v Idiot 2.

He should be arrested, tried for exacerbated religious (and perhaps racial) incitement, and - in my view at least - deserves to be locked up for psychiatric treatment as a result. He is a public danger by his acts of crazed provocation. And he knows darned well what he does.

So does that mean any time someone suitably inclined burns a bible, which will offend many Christians, should be treated the same? Or because most christian faiths wouldn't retaliate, is it not such a big deal?
