Greatest sledges of all time
Just stumbled across this blog which features the greatest sledges ever said. Worth a look, it's pretty funny.

Re: Greatest sledges of all time
Ravi Shastri v Mike Whitney was pretty good. Wasn't aware of that.
I am reminded of a smart one from Azharuddin. Not an on field one, but an off the field remark to a news reporter. This was ahead of the thrilling 1998 home series against Aus [in his second stint as captain after replacing Sachin]. This reporter guy asked him of how his team was preparing for Shane Warne, what it's chances were against him. Azhar blankly asked him "Who's Warne? I am not worried about him. I got 5 guys in the side who can take him out."
One of the rare moments Azhar talked so confidently and aggressively.

Mark Waugh v James Ormond was a real gem too.

Re: Greatest sledges of all time
Very good. McGrath, Hughes and Healey come across as really lovely people don't they?
And this one:
Thomas: "It weighs about 5 ounces, it's red, shiny, round and you're supposed to hit it."
Richards hits the next ball from Thomas for six.
Richards: "You know what it looks like, you go find it."
has been attributed to just about every cricketer you can think of. I wonder if anyone ever really said it.

I've seen most of them, I think my favourites are McGrath to Atherton and Botham to Rod Marsh.

This looks suspect.

Looks like M. Waugh was also a lovely character who invited a few.....

Merv Hughes was offensive wasn't he? Offensively unfunny. All of his seem to be incredibly unwitty and idiotic. One of a number of equally unfunny people in the world who use a swear word as a punchline rather than an embellishment.

Re: Greatest sledges of all time
Hmmm, suspicious that the link goes to a betting website.
Most of these are either:
a) apocryphal
b) crude rater than witty
c) both of the above
The only really good 'sledge' i've heard is the far too often repeated Flintoff one to Tino Best. This was good because a) it was said in good humour, and b) it actually worked as it helped contribute to Best throwing his wicket away the next ball.
How many of those actually had an effect on the game? How many of them are actually even real?

My favourite is Steve Kirby's slightly out of left-field, "I've seen better batsmen in my fridge," to Athers.

Classic! I'd forgotten about that one.
I do think Kirby could have been one of those classic cult bowlers who wasn't very good but good entertainment for the crowd, like Tino Best, Andre Nel or Mitch Johnson.
Re: Greatest sledges of all time
Careful what you wish for - didn't he leave Gloucs for Warwicks at the end of the season in an effort to realise his international ambitions (AKA to suck up to Gilo on a daily basis)?

"Hey Athers, now that Pidge has retired are you considering a comeback to Test cricket?"

Re: Greatest sledges of all time
The Glenn McGrath to Athers one is usually attributed to Dennis Lillee (to any number of batsmen) when I've read it.
Speaking of Athers, I always liked his retort on tour to Ian Healy's, "You're a farking cheat."
"When in Rome, dear boy.."

I like the simple but cutting ones...
'Siddons: "For Christ's sake, it's not a Test match."
Waugh: "Of course it isn't. You're here."

If you're refering to this one...Jontyh wrote:The Glenn McGrath to Athers one is usually attributed to Dennis Lillee (to any number of batsmen) when I've read it.
That was our own embee to Athers (who was in a taxi that pulled up as we were waiting to cross the street) after the MCG Test 2006.embee wrote:"Hey Athers, now that Pidge has retired are you considering a comeback to Test cricket?"

Re: Greatest sledges of all time
My old cricket club - the reds - played in a turf comp called mercantile...needless to say it had a team called "Stock Exchange"...the first time the Reds played the upper class twits, the Reds slip cordon cried out in unison "they're all ordinaries"
The Reds of course sledged themselves - even down to the motto - "win nervously, lose tragically"

He's playing for Somerset now.
He was probably worth a run in the England team around 2002. His time has passed now though, you would have thought.

When I was playing in Shires cricket, we used to get sledged more by our own players than the opposition.
Good times.

When I was playing hockey as a teenager, I was sin-binned for sledging one of my own team mates. Can't remember what I said, but remeber the penalty for it. It was funny as hell fronting the judiciary the next week.
