Re: Young saffa breaks AB's record
Lamb was pretty useful before he went to England.

I remember Sam Kekovich had a lot of good things to say about Lamb.

Lamby was a pretty average England player tbh, though incredibly brave against the West Indies.

How many tests did he play again?

And for what its worth.... Lamb, Smith, Radford all stayed in the UK long after their careers ended. KP & Trott have both married English girls too. Tawny Grigg is the one exception.
Still see Lamby every now and again. He's as Northants as they come. I got chucked out of his local the other day though, so it may be a while before I see him again.

Aye. Usually they know I'm coming and have pillows fastened over their bumps by belts. Unfortunately this greenhorn didn't know - prime target!

A shed load - averaged 33
By no means that bad in 1980's-early 90's terms but not in the league of Gower or Gooch.

That average would have been at least 43 if he had been playing now.

Re: Young saffa breaks AB's record
Lamb qualified for England, like Grieg, through his parents being English. It is surprising to me that he did not receive his Test call-up until he had spent 4 tyears in county cricket and had already been one of Wisden's 5COY in 1981 based on his performances in 1980.
To call Lamb "average" for anyone who actually saw him play, either at Test or county level, is frankly absurd. Not only did he score 3 consecutive 100s against the 1984 West Indies "blackwash" side but I don't think a certain Bruce Reid would call him "average". Given the opposition he faced he was probably the best of England's Saffie imports of that era, narrowly outranking Robin Smith and Greig:

So obviously not much local talent around.

Most of England's Saffie imports have underachieved- Lamb, Hick (although he's a Zimbot), Smith, even KP now.....There's the feeling that they were good, but could have been even better.

Maybe because they are playing for an adopted country?

Re: Young saffa breaks AB's record
Both Smith and Lamb had their problems against spin, but to call either anything but very good is incorrect. Especially Smith, who averaged 43 IIRC.
Re: Young saffa breaks AB's record
Smith was horribly treated by the likes of Ray Illingworth. Should have played many more tests for England.

Mullally and McCague were established FC cricketers in Oz before they played CC cricket ...which they were chased to do because they could be played as Poms rather than imports ...highly unlikely either would have represented Oz if they had stayed in Oz ...were fringe players in the Wozzie team and Mullally had moved to Vomitia and was a fringe player there

Martin McCague would've beaten David Boon's 'cans on a plane' record were it not for t'England management. FACT.

I had met both before they played for WA and would have regarded neither as "Poms" despite McCague's mums's very Oirish accent
