Those not considered "employed" after five years, were unemployed, retired, studying full time, engaged in caring duties, doing voluntary work or trying to start a business for which they had yet to receive income.

Big Dog, we were part of a coalition that invaded both Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, I've never lived in a war zone but I'd reckon it would play havoc with a quiet suburban lifestyle. WE are partly responsible for smashing these peoples lives. Therefore we have a responsibility to offer an alternative place to live for those who qualify to be here.

The integration of the Vietnamese boat people into the community has been brilliant. (You might remember we were also involved in a bullsh!t war over there as well). Australia is a better place for having them.

At what point will you get it?

You tell me. You're the expert on this report.

I would also point out that these don't seem to related to asylum seekers who arrived here by boat but instead the refugees waiting in the queue that the right seem to think is so sacrosanct. Perhaps we should be taking in more asylum seekers who at least have shown some initiative in getting here.

I am a bit intrigued by where these people get the money to pay a people smuggler to get them to Australia though.

What a load of sanctimonious, self righteous twaddle.
The Viets & the Afghans are worlds apart. Unlike the Viets, the Iraq's & Afghans will never intergrate into our society. Being mostly Muslims they will reject our culture & values. The Chancellor of Germany recently stated that Islamic Multiculturalism had failed. Do you really think it will be any different here?
Perhaps you are the one who needs to 'get it'

People within a war zone aren't necessarily completely without resources.

Further, desparate people do extraordinary things.

It's opinion BD, just my opinion, nothing more.

You will remember all kinds of screaming during the late 70's that these VC monkeys don't belong here. I'd imagine that your parents were amongst that lot.

Since 1840 we have a thriving population (estimated between 300000 and 1000000) of "Afghani immigrants" roaming Central Oz ...I'm sure we could put our next lot out there too

They'd have to be a Mohammed "Mick" Dittman in there somewhere.

The "Ghan railway is named in honour of the Afghans who drove camels through the deserts for the early Australian explorers.
