He'd be even happier machine gunning them all 201 kms off the coast. Well I think that's what he'd prefer. He never actually says anything.

Aren't the left (or the right side of the left at least) currently striving to be seen as harder on the asylum seekers than the tories? Or am I missing something

It's sh!t policy from a government that's dead in the water. (No Big Dog, I don't mean the RAAF, napalm or phosphorus).

Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (III)
Your lame attempt at sarcasm still doesnt answer my original question. Why do lefties bend over & drop their pants every time the hallowed name of Assylum Seeker is mentioned. They then descend into overdoses of self righteousness indignation everytime someone has the temerity to question the right of these people to come here. Its so obvious that many of these people are not genuine asylum seekers & are just treating this country & every one in it with contempt however it seems lefties are only too happy to be taken for fools.
Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (III)
Well they do have a right to come here. Most of them turn out to be genuine and 6000 over four years all absorbed in to the refugee quota is hardly a menacing tide of humanity.

Given that the Howard government didn't go as far as exterminating those that turned up in boats I question how you can categorise those accepting the rights of asylum seekers to exist as "lefties".
You have every right to question the process.
Frankly, I don't know anyone who believes that everyone turning up on a boat is a genuine asylum seeker.

Just like no believes that there aren't genuine refugees in those boats who deserve to have their claims properly reviewed.
Or maybe some people do believe that.

Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (III)
Can someone explain why asylum seekers who buy a ticket, get on board a plane, and fly in to the country, are treated so much better than people who take the boat option?
Given that those people reportedly outnumber boat arrivals by several to one, wouldn't a government or an opposition make a shitload of mileage cracking down on them and 'making a real difference'?
For that matter, with people who take the boat option, and who presumably have crossed borders to get to Indonesia to get on the boat, why don't they get on a plane at Denpasar and fly in to Aus?

Because that requires a passport. Difficult for many when you come from a place that has been at war for close to a decade.

The pommy equivalent of "Border Security' can be a good laugh. Especially the dipsh1ts who try to beat some of the duty free regs.
"Yesy the three suitcase full of cigarettes are for my own personal use." says the gasping seventy tear old.
Or the pillocks who want to bring in home remedies bat out of bats dung and the like.

...and why is that? (assuming it is true)
Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (III)
BD - it is true. More boatpeople from Vietnam came here under Fraser's reign then we have seen in the last four years.
So aren't you trying to say that get rid of the current government and let the conservatives back in to do what they do best? You obviously think that you guys can handle the boat people issue better than anyone else. I merely pointed out that this is not the case.

Fair enough.
My final word.
My biggest gripe is that these people have no respect for this country or its people. They reject our culture, our values, our lifestyle & our laws. They only see us as a cash cow to be exploited. The fact that they all pass through other countries capable of offering safe haven to get here invalidates their asylum seeker claims (in my view). They only come here to jump on the gravy train and that really pisses me off because there are so many citizens of this country that need help but can't get it while the refos's wan't for nothing. My charity begins at home.

Wait a minute, this report can't be right. Tony Abbott told us all that the Carbon Price will cause the end of Australian civilisation as we know it.

Carbon tax impact "modest" on companies
Peter Trute, AAP Senior Finance Writer
September 20, 2011 - 5:39PM
.AAP
The federal government's proposed carbon tax will have a minimal impact on the value of Australia's top listed companies, according to analysis from a major bank.
Elaine Prior, director and senior analyst with Citi Investment Research, said the overall impact of the carbon tax was not expected to materially change the valuations of companies included in the ASX200.
Addressing an Association of Superannuation Funds luncheon inSydney on Tuesday, Ms Prior said the impact of the new tax on the valuation of companies examined would be "modest".
Advertisement: Story continues below "If things were really as bad as we sometimes hear in the media I'm thinking that my fund manager clients would be rather more concerned about this than they actually are," she said.
Ms Prior gave a summary of research done for fund managers of the expected impact of the carbon tax.
The analysis looked at companies most likely to incur some impact on their investment valuation due to factors such as not being able to pass on the cost of the carbon tax to customers or being in emissions-intensive trade-exposed (EITE) industries.
Following the briefing, Ms Prior told AAP that "across the market as a whole I think the impact will be marginally negative - in the order of less than one per cent as a whole".
"Investment is generally made on the basis of how people value companies and what we are saying is this doesn't change the valuation significantly."
Ms Prior also said analysis had cast doubt on the cost of the federal Opposition's policy of achieving large amounts of carbon emissions reduction through the use of soil carbon.
"We just are not convinced at this stage that that policy is deliverable at the costs that are being mooted for it," she said.

And now this...
Swan named Finance Minister of Year
September 20, 2011 - 6:14PM
.AAP
Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan is about to become the second Australian MP in 29 years to be named Euromoney magazine's Finance Minister of the Year.
The London-based finance publication is due to make the announcement in the early hours of Wednesday (AEST).
But news of the award is already circulating in Australia after being revealed at Labor's caucus meeting in Canberra on Tuesday morning.
Former Labor treasurer, and later prime minister, Paul Keating won the award in 1984 - and was later referred to in some quarters as the "world's greatest treasurer".
At the time Mr Keating was congratulated by then shadow treasurer John Howard.
