4-0 ... Karti was basically right.
He got the timing wrong, and the wind direction, but the score was right.

It's a side with more experience than 2005 but not a lot older I'd guess. OK, one or two may fall by the wayside with injury, loss of form or motivation but most of these should still be around in 3 or 4 years' time, a lot longer in some cases.
We don't play another Test this year so this will be the first year since the early 50s when England haven't given a player a Test debut. The challenge will be to bring through the next generation even if they might find Test opportunities hard to come by for a while.

Having followed England, i'm all too aware how best laid plans can go to sh!t on tour pretty quickly but they didn't help themselves arriving not that fit.
For England, the hard work begins now. On top of the old colonial rivalries opoosition now have an added incentive of us being top of the perch. I doubt we'll subside like the 2005 side did, as winning the Ashes seemed to be the pinnacle for them. And this side has more about it imo.
Yeah, the main priority for India is finding a quality spinner. Or rehabilitating Harbhajan.
I was very surprised they called up RP Singh from a beach in Miami when Patel had been picked ahead of Singh and Sreesanth in the Windies.

The future is looking extremely healthy. The only player I would expect to retire in the next 3 years is Strauss, while the likes of Root, Taylor, Hildreth, Bairstow, Patel can pressurise the incumbant batsmen. Bairstow and also Davies and Kieswetter are there if Prior ever gets injured and we have young seamers like Finn, Meaker, Shahzad and even Onions isn't past it yet. Add in Borthwick, Rashid, Briggs, and Monty will only be 32 in 3 years time so we should have strength in depth.
Re: England v India, 4th Test, The Oval, 18-22 August, 2011
The one day side looks to be the only avenue for a youngun to get recognition at the moment which makes JAMODIs more than just JAMODIs for England now.
And it also means the Lions carries quite a bit of weight in selection, difficult to see anyone getting called up outside of the Lions squad ( no doubt Allan will be along to show im speaking nonsense)

Hi All, just checking in. Been too busy enjoying all the wins to come on here lately. Just wanted to say well done England for performing as expected this summer.
As you were.

Was Rod Tucker's decision correct?
Will he be allowed to enter India to umpire in the IPL?

Would've still been out if Sachin had reviewed it. So, hard to call it wrong.
In any case, Swann had Sachin bang to rights a couple of overs previous, one stone dead, another which would've stayed with the on-field umpire's call if he'd given it out (which he really should've, playing no stroke to a ball coming in) but Simon Taufel decided that he'd had enough of all of this "best umpire in the world" nonsense and went all not-out-ery on us.
He was out. Then. Before. After. Whatever. He was out.

You can't be too hard on Taufel. All this English bowlers beating the bat regularly takes some getting used to

Gary 111 wrote:The worst for me was Gambhir. Took a bit of a knock on the head and refused to field or bat until number 9. Eventually he did go in, batted for an hour - so clearly was able to bat in the second innings. Dravid must have been shattered from his eppic first innings but Gambhir refused to go out second time around and give Dravid a rest. He also allowed Raina to go in after 76 overs. Gambhir is an opener and used to facing the new ball, Raina has shown he can't bat against the short stuff. As it happened he didn't even last that long.
Then even when Sharma was batting with Gambhir he showed absolutely no stomach - he happily let Sharma take a single off the 5th ball, meaning he would have to face the majority of the next over. Then, as it happened Sharma clipped the first ball of Swann's next over to square leg, but they didn't take a single because Gambhir was leaning on his bat uninterested in running.
Gambhir may be talented, but there is no way England would allow a player with an attitude like that to play for them.
he was supposed to have had a serious concussion. in fact i am surprised he was made to bat at all. he certainly didnt look ok and it was not like india needed to bat out 10 overs to save a match or try and get 25 runs to win it. the initial doctor's advice suggested another blow could end up being extremely serious

He didn't look OK because he's sh!t. As 783 runs in 26 innings @ 32.62 alludes to? A sorry-for-himself weako.

Sachin can't complain, he was out a couple of times to Harris but not given and there were no reviews in that series. Seems umps are more loath to give guns out than plodders.
At least Sehwag does pairs in style; Raina hangs around for his.
Well done England but it was a bit boring for neutrals who expected more combative fireworks from the best two sides in the world.

A bit boring for neutrals? I thought it was fascinating watching England finally live up to their potential. And also fascinating to watch a number one side that has seemingly failed to heed the lessons that should have been learned when Australia started to plummet from the summit.

Now that England are number 1, will there be a Supertest against the Rest of The Rest Of The World?

Not being facetious here but does it soften the Ashes blow at all now you've seen other teams get dismantled?

There's a 3 test series in England next year.

not much, it hurt terribly to lose to England in 1985 when we were absolute sh!t, and felt much the same last year when we should have done a lot better but didn't
the worst were 1981 and 2005 when we were in a position to win but didn't

I preferred the closer series as it gave me something to cling onto in the cold winter nights. I didn't mind massively seeing Aus take apart others(obviously the winning didn't rest well in most ways) as again it gave me some solace.

And in 2009. One got the impression that losing that Oval test didn't enter Punter's mind. Instead there were reports that the players were disappointed that they'd have to celebrate the Ashes win on a train to Scotland the next day.
