Re: Rugby Gilly
The French, led by a half-African captain, went ahead early thanks to early brilliance by their Georgian scrumhalf, who had to leave after halftime and was replaced by his Portuguese flyhalf. The final nail in the English coffin was a drop goal by the replacent flyhalf of Italian and Vietnamese descent, and a Basque got the Man of the Match award.
Ah, these French, so full of flair and distinctively different from the rest of the world...

They are to international rugby what England are to test cricket.
But not quite as good. Obviously.

Re: Rugby Gilly
Sometimes you just watch, slightly aghast.
The French battled and harried like tigers, as you knew they would. Game well raised by them.
But a bit of a disconnect between head and legs on the other side, starting at the top and spreading down. When - the finally reinstated - Flood started tossing it up in the air to absent, lagging teammates, you knew the rot had finally set in.
I hope the French have the grace (and elan) to keep their game raised now. And haven't just briefly surfaced from mediocrity to down the old enemy.
Although I wish the Welsh to win the encounter - as they are also (unlike England) with a clear game plan, and are just as determined in their play, but marginally less cocky!

Can't see them ever being world beaters. Stranger things have happened though I suppose (English cricket for example).Zat wrote:Fixed.vilkrang wrote:They are to international rugby what England are to test cricket.

If they hadn't lost to Ireland they would be in the "easy" half...skully wrote:So let me get this right. The Wannabees have to beat the Boks for the right to play the ABs (presuming they beat the Argies), while the Welsh and the Frogs get to fight it out for a place in the Final. FMD!!!
Still, no group winner through yet. By tomorrow the hosts could be the only unbeaten side left!

Re: Rugby Gilly
Could have seen the end of some significant international careers today. Wilkinson, Tindall, Thompson, Cueto, Easter, Stevens and not forgetting O'Driscoll, O'Gara, O'Connell and D'Arcy. How many of those will we see in an international shirt again? Almost certainly none of them in another World Cup, anyway.
Australia v SA next then - I have a feeling that the winners of this will be the ones lifting the cup in a couple of weeks' time.

Re: Rugby Gilly
Mind you .....
Neither of the teams [in 1900] realised that they had competed in the Olympic Games, with the match advertised as part of the World's Fair. The event was retrospectively recognised as an Olympic contest by the International Olympic Committee in 1912, and the medals won by the teams were upgraded to Gold for Great Britain and silver for France. The scheduled competition at the 1904 Summer Olympics, held in St Louis, was cancelled at short notice due to a lack of facilities, and the sport has not been played in the Olympic Games since.
