Best but most overlooked innings in Tests.
From the other thread...
I'll start - Roy Frederick's 169 v Lillee and Thommo at Perth in 1976.
Didn't even make the Wisden Top 100 innings FFS.

Re: Best but most overlooked innings in Tests.
Actually, maybe Jessop's innings should be on this last rather than the most famous one.

Re: Best but most overlooked innings in Tests.
Did Clag's 100* (out of 198) v Windies at MCG on Boxing Day 1981 get a mention in that list?

What, you nominated Clag's 100* for the Wisden list?

Hey? I'm talking about the other thread about the most famous innings.
Hughes' 100* was about 9th on the Wisden list I think.

No, Jessop's innings will be as immortal as Beefy's at Headingley is, as it was so unexpected. Despite Jessop's reputation as a big-hitter in fc cricket he did little, outside of this innings, in his Test career although MacLaren reckoned he was worth his place on his fielding alone.

Agree it was immortal but I would suggest it is largely forgotten outside cricket historians and similar tragics.

Can remember the bannies spitting blood when that list came out. SRT didn't even get one in.

Fark I remember that innings. The qunt just wouldn't get out. I think he barely reached 3 figures again did he? Also, I seem to recall Sneddon getting Deano lbw for 99 in that match.

I forget where I was now (Canberra maybe) but can remember saying to a mate who'd got up to take a leak to have one for me. Just didn't want to move from the couch. Now that was test cricket.

Bit of a contradiction there, it cannot be both "immortal" and "largely forgotten". I would dispute your last point. Most cricket fans would be familiar with the name "Jessop" just as much as they would be with those of Ranji or Trumper but, unlike the latter, his fame, at least at Test level, rests largely on that lone innings.

Seriously - if you asked the average subi cricket fan what they knew about Gilbert Jessop what do you think they would say?

Re: Best but most overlooked innings in Tests.
Though an all run five at The Oval should be enough to score you legend status. I remember a Shield match at the Gabba after they'd got rid of the dog track and there was an all run five. I never thought i'd see an all run four let alone that.
