Re: Qaddaffi dead/captured?
Apparently Gaddafi's body is in a freezer on display at a shopping centre.
I think it would have given the new government a lot more credibilty if he'd been taken alive & put on trial. All this will do is stir up the extremists.

A picture of a dead Gaddafi was accompanied with the headline "That's for Lockerbie"
They then went on- "Revenge is sweet. The architect of Lockerbie, who supplied the IRA with bombs and had London WPC (policewoman) Yvonne Fletcher murdered, died like a rat after being cornered in a drain."
Can't we as a first-world, democratic nation quietly accept that yes, Gaddafi did indeed receive his comeuppance without having to blurt on about "revenge"? It's all very medieval and i've always found the act of metaphorically dancing on someone's grave most uncalled for, no matter how hideous they were when still alive.
After all, if we are 100% legally correct, there seems to be a very strong likelihood that Gaddafi was murdered without trial.
These people are going to look pretty stupid if/when it is proved that Iran was behind the Lockerbie bombing.

F*ck. C4 news show parts of video showing Gadaffi being "sexually assaulted" with a metal pipe before he was killed. What a great start for the NTC. Gadaffi has probably had much worse done to others but it is not right to mimic a tyrant.

Woeful thing to hear IMO. Aye, agreed that he has no doubt done worse to more people, but still it's not right in any way.
Re: Qaddaffi dead/captured?
Dire stuff. Has our progress really been so infinitesimal since the 1500s?
I'm surprised they didn't stick his head on a pike and throw rocks at it.
Or give him a little blumpkin pie to see him safely on his way.

His last words were "what you are doing is forbidden" says C4. Horrific stuff by horrific people to a horrific man who's done horrific things.

hmm, considering the profile of the combatants, i.e. most have had no military training but all have suffered massively under gaddafi especially in the last few months, it is not entirely surprising
not desirable, but quite understandable. its very hard to imagine the kind of mental trauma some of these men have gone through and the first chance they got to get their hands on this man they probably would not be thinking of the views of the international community but probably consumed by the raw emotions of revenge for the brutal deaths of people they know

Re: Qaddaffi dead/captured?
also the circumstances of his death were terrible, but his death itself is probably a better outcome for libya than a long trial with gaddafi giving long tirades and the possibility of organisations like the ICJ asking for his custody as well. the end would have been the same - the death of gaddafi, whether by a hangman or otherwise. but it would still give some oxygen till then to any pro-gaddafi militants, who will now be left with no inspiration
most modern states were built on massive bloodshed. one hopes the libyans can find common ground among themselves to build an inclusive, stable country

I have no sympathy for Gaddafi, but the way he died is a stain on those who are trying to build a new country out of the rubble of the previous regime. I am not optimistic, I think civil war beckons. Likewise Egypt. Arab Spring? My arse.

Nothing wrong with a bit of blood lust. He had to die that way. Any other way would stink of some regime driven motivation. Noiw they avoid a trial and can throw their hands in the air and say "horrible, but boys will be boys".

I have no sympathy for Gadaffi and I have no crocodile tears. But this sort of behaviour is exactly what the whole fight was about. Where's the break from the previous regime if you're going to act the same way? I can understand why it happened but there's no justifying it.

It appears as though they didn't actually disagree with the methods Gaddafi used, they just disagreed with who should be able to dish out that punishment.
They're just lowering themselves to Gaddafi's level. It was a great opportunity to break the violent cycle and they've so far ruined it. 53 or so people were executed by these rebels recently, allgedly some with their hands tied behind their backs. Where's nato now to protect innocent civilians?

Re: Qaddaffi dead/captured?
I believe there's every chance that had Gaddafi ever stood trial he would have given the locations of mass graves and torture centres, along with the names of those responsible for them.
Working on the basis that a fair proportion of the new "leadership" are ex-acolytes of the Colonel, it's hardly surprising that he was never going to be allowed to live.
In 1969 when Gaddafi overthrew King Idris, the streets of Tripoli were full of people celebrating the dawn of a new future, just as we see now - but I think history will repeat itself, and that Libya will remain a very troubled land.
Finally, I have to say I fear for the Syrian people if unrest grows there. Having seen the fate of Muammar Gaddafi, I think we can safely assume that president Assad has already vowed that he won't go the same way, no matter how many protesters bodies litter the streets as he clings to power like sh!t to a blanket ......

Re: Qaddaffi dead/captured?
Gaddafi prolly had it coming to him - so for him to expect/demand leniency was never going to work!
Pop - he's gone .... all done in a matter of seconds - and too late to reverse the bullets' path.
Now ... how about Mugabe being next?
Damn, I forgot ... no oil down there in southern Africa!
I give Assad 3 months tops.... but he'll be wise (unlike Gaddafi) and make a run for it before the end comes ... with a couple of trillion bucks stashed away to keep him in the lifestyle he's become accustomed to!
