I think most Aussies regret it Bas. When the news first broke, all that was said was that 9 guys got off a gang rape of a 10 year old. Then it was elaborated that it was at an Aboriginal settlement. Alcohol and boredom can make these people do wretched things and the judge presumably took all that into account. But it makes it no less sickening and most legal experts and social commentators are up in arms here in Aus.

It was a giant ****** up all around ....and there were lots of people at fault ...hopefully those indirectly responsible will be able to learn from their mistakes ....and that an appeal against the sentences can be successful ...

it was a truly appalling set of events...no one doubts that if the little girl had been white the guilty parties would have been locked up for a long time...it is particularly dreadful that the child now 12 has been removed from the community and placed into foster care while the men are still living in Aurukun...

the Qld Premier is aghast...the police proecutor has been stood down from his job and a thorough review of all cases in FNQld over the past two years has been announced

Is there no such thing as statutory rape in Australia? I am absolutely dumbfounded by this case. That judge needs to be sacked, quickly and publicly.

If she did take it into account then she needs to be beaten with a rubber hose before being sacked.

Biggest issue is the crown prosecutor he was the one who asked for non custodial sentences for such a horrific crime.

Both he and the judge should be sacked, unfortunately as others have said though far north queensland is almost another planet and the idiotic way they deal with the drunken violence and rape is just sending the indigenous community further into the mire.
