Re: I like Jimmy
So it was a stoush with Dossie that finally ended it for Marto? Welly well well.
As for the rest, I bet most in the Aus side thought Drunky was an arrogant little qunt when he made the Test side. Sort of goes with the territory for many who end up being a cut above as a cricketer.
Good read but.

As for Dossie v Marto - the way Marto batted on that last day suggested that he had already made his mind up that that was his last innings. Hard to see that Dossie caused his retirement because of something else later that day.

Aye, it was prolly the last straw that removed any doubt, and the stoush was prolly instigated by the loopy Marto.JGK wrote:As for Dossie v Marto - the way Marto batted on that last day suggested that he had already made his mind up that that was his last innings. Re: I like Jimmy
Having pegged Clarke's behaviour as arrogant, Anderson writes: "I said as much to Damien Martyn, who I was chatting to at the time, and, looking down at my feet, added: 'See this pad here, I really want to wrap it around his head'.
Poor Jimmy. Must be self-abusing alllll the time.
'Do it,' Martyn replied, completely straight-faced.

God I hated his attitude when he got promoted to the NSW A team. Was always going to be groomed for the Captaincy I guess. Glad he did something worthwhile last summer but ****** this Aussie team makes it hard to like them. I prefer focussing on the bowlers. Plenty of good pacemen about, one of them is bound to turn into quality.
Marto gone up in my estimation now. May even start like a Pom bowler who doesn't by like Harmison now...
Oh, and there needs to be a Michael Clarke entry in the glossary

I can actually imagine the entire situation and in my head it's f*cking funny. I knew there was a reason I've always liked Marto.

Hmmm... the man had a lot going for him. Shame I didn't realise how much at the time. I think I got caught up with his shitty soul patch and played the hair, not the man.

aye, you don't jump down the track to slap a fast bowler over his head; then try to flog a length ball on off stump through unless you truly DGAF ... he'd decided
there was talk even at the time that there had been a simmering dispute with Hayden who had been pointing at Martyn right from the start of the series as someone who should be dropped before he was

... perhaps, but I enjoyed watching him bat, and I don't think I could ever say the same about Hayden, despite his results. Hayden was a brute; Martyn's batting at its best was very easy on the eye. Better overseas average than at home, too ... lots of things to like about his overall career, despite the downside.

Always have thought that Punter is more super competitive than arrogant. Clarke has exuded that sense of entitlement since he put on the NSW cap.
Seems like Lee and KP get on a lot better than Clarke and Anderson.

The article goes on to say they were chugging down the beers too. Brilliant choice as leader, Flintoff.

Re: I like Jimmy
Absolutely no doubt, nor argument that Marto was brilliant to watch and a member of my best ever Aus side in our decade of dominance to 2006-07. The watch the likes of him and MEW batting together was a thing of beauty.lardbucket wrote:... perhaps, but I enjoyed watching him bat, and I don't think I could ever say the same about Hayden, despite his results. But like any cricket side, and I played in many, there is no such thing as perfect team harmony. Marto's lone wolf nature opened him to criticism and also allowed him to sit back and observe the behaviour of others, coming to some dark conclusions perhaps derogatory towards others.

Re: I like Jimmy
Having used the example of MEW and Marto batting together, on checking, they never had any success doing so, with not a single century partnership between them. I guess MEW was in the final 2 years of his career as Marto returned from his 93-94 exile. Marto had plenty of hundred stands with Gilly, SRW, NLWL, Boof, Pup and even Dizzy and SKW, but none with MEW.
MEW and Marto and shared 2 50 parterships - a valuable 75 when Marto came to the wicket at 5-29 v NZ in Mar 2000, and a 69* in the low scoring 3rd Test at Trent Bridge in 2001, when Marto came to the wicket after SRW snapped his calf muscle in our nervy chase for 158. As SRW hobbled off, we were effectively 4-89 and shaky as.

Re: I like Jimmy
So Jammy blindsided Broke-e-back with a pad, while he was whistling a little tune to himself in an arrogant manner?
Those crazy kids. Hope he followed it up with a wedgie.
Cricketers shouldn't write autobiographies. They inevitably just out themselves as bellends.
