I guess that means the Aussie trip to Pakistan is looking unlikely.

Very sad for Pakistan.

Another attempt by Al-Qaeda to snuff out democracy and promote civil unrest. 130 people were killed on her return to the country. Similar, in many ways, to the attack on the Golden Mosque in Iraq which was designed to promote civil war between the Shia's and the Sunnis. The decision to lift the state of emergency seems remarkably premature.

Trip was unlikely anyway.

But really that means nothing, pakistan are heading towards as trev said civil war.

Bad news for the whole world.

Have to say that as tragic as this is, it wasn't unexpected. Being right in the mix of things at those rallies, she was a sitting duck. Her security team probably should have heeded the warning of the failed assasination attempt a couple of months back.

knowing how things are there i am not sure if this was free of any involvement from the state. even in her first rally when back, the lights on the road where the rally was passing through went off just before the blast and came on miraculously back just after

If anyone has any doubts of Musharraf of the military regime of Pakistan arranging such assasinations, then it need only be remembered that the previous attack on Benazir was facilitated by switching off the streetlights when her convoy entered a particular block.

The bombs then were planted in a police jeep though it was claimed to public that it was a 'suicide bomber'.

This is exactly what A-Q want people to think. Musharraf offered to fly Bhutto in directly to her home when she returned but it was she who insisted on an open motorcade that led to the deaths of 130 spectators. Musharraf has himself been the subject of at least 14 or 15 assassination attempts in which his bodyguards have been killed. Sharif's shameless politicking (when he isn't even a candidate) to try and fill the vacuum by shroud-waving and appealing to the baser instincts of the mob is positively nauseating.

Benazir Bhutto was supported by the US and echoed their line of the necessity of defeating islamic fundamentalist militants. It was the US who pressured Musharraf to allow her to return, hold elections and lift the state of emergency. It was the State Department's hope that, after the elections, Bhutto would serve as PM to Musharraf as President. Musharraf gains nothing from Bhutto's death and stands to lose a great deal (as does Pakistan as a whole). That is not to say that Al-Qaeda has not successfully infiltrated the ISI, the Pakistan Military Intelligence Service (it was they, after all, who put the Taliban in power in Afghanistan in the early 1990s) and they may well have played a part in both the Karachi and Rawalpindi attacks.

The only gainers from the chaos that may be created as a result of these murders are the islamic fundamentalists. The proper reaction to this tragedy is to turn on Bin Laden and his cronies (who are the real villains behind this) and turf them out of Pakistan root-and-branch.

it would be naive to assume that musharraf or someone in his government didnt have a hand in this. he pretty much threatened her and nawaz by saying dont take out political rallies because you might be 'bumped off' while at the same time holding massive rallies himself with people bused in to stand and watch. you expect any political leader to listen to that?

also if he spent more of his time arresting terrorists and releasing human rights activists and lawyers from jail, instead of the other way round, this may not have come to pass

bhutto is no angel with regards to formenting terrorism but the security afforded to her in a city that is basically army HQ in pakistan was shocking

Didn't think one more attempt would go through so soon after the botched one in Karchi.

One more violent death in the Bhutto family then.

No doubt Musharraf will get away with it yet again. How that man is still in power is beyond me.

Tragic. Pakistan is going to hell in a handbasket.

Their nuclear capability means that, in the next 10 years, maybe less, we are going to have a situation there.

A very sad news but Benazir's regime was corrupt in the first place before she was replaced and why was she selected to run for the election in the first place? Have people forgotten her husband Mr 10%?. Her and Shariff were both equally corrupt.
