Police say they know who the suspect is and are currently chasing the shooter on Interstate 81. Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe says the gunman is believed to be a disgruntled employee of the station.

If she, her cameraman and all passers-by had a gun this would obviously never have happened. Because if someone's about to shoot you, there's time to reach for your own and get some shots in before they react. "Logically", if more people have guns, fewer people get shot. So, if more guns = less shootings, then infinite guns = zero shootings, and zero guns = infinite shootings. Must be correct, because in the UK, gun ownership is very low and yet everyone's getting shot, left, right and centre. Every f*cking day. Relentless. No one fights with fists here. Never seen it.
Clearly, all America needs to do to stop gun crime is to mandate the arming of everyone to the teeth with military grade firearms. Definitely won't be any shootings whatsoever. In fact, why stop at guns? They aren't the most powerful weapon, and if more guns is good, better weapons must also be good. So If guns are good, artillery is better. Grenades will "discourage" would-be assailants. Land mines are known to stop burglars in their tracks. Mandatory tank ownership would eliminate road rage. And who wouldn't sleep soundly, knowing dad's keeping watch over you in his Apache? Sounds positively utopian. Never know when you'll need a nuke, either. Best get a few.
Do Americans have so much fear of each other that they must all have guns to protect themselves from themselves? There is a desire for protection, and then there is paranoia. This is coming from someone who was burgled by people with knives while I was in the house so it's not as if I don't understand.
It's also odd in another way, because I'm fairly sure if I were wandering around casually wielding a halberd or similar it wouldn't be OK, however something far more dangerous is not only allowed, but encouraged.
Once you have your gun, f*ck everyone else - I'm alright, Jack. The majority of people think like this about all things, and obviously a lot of Americans also like guns, so no change will be made. I've seen children's parties at a shooting range  (Was that Louis Theroux?). Unfortunately some people can't be trusted with guns and with such high levels of gun ownership events like this will result. There's people in this world I wouldn't trust to use a paperclip responsibly, let alone a gun...
Still, at least everyone got their daily dose of vicarious suffering that we all love; we're good for today. What will tomorrow bring to satisfy us?

Re: Another school shooting in the USA
I think it was an Australian comedian who pointed out that after a shooting atrocity Australia banned guns, everyone went "Yeah, sounds about right" and they've never had another incident.
In England we had the Dunblane massacre, after which we tightened up our gun control and have never had a similar massacre.
America has multiple massacres every year yet the pro gun crowd (which amazingly seems to be about half the country) will never allow any form of tightening up the gun laws.
It's a f*cked up country with dozens of millions of f*cktards who are blind to the fact that tightening gun laws has worked in other countries and would therefore be likely to work in their country.
But no. Guns for everyone. That will make it safer.
I'm glad I don't live there, it's infuriating from thousands of miles away, can't imagine how frustrating it would be living there.

Half voted for Bush though. Since only an idiot would vote for an idiot, half of them must be idiots.
No citizen would vote for someone who is quite obviously less intelligent than themselves, half their household appliances and their car.

Aye, obviously if it's NOT the guns in the US causing all these gun-related deaths, the US just has an over-representation of stupid hateful scummy murderous twats ...

Indeed vilks.
It was noted earlier that the guys who took down that terrorist on the train last week didn't have any guns.

The worst thing is that the piece of crap that did it ended up topping himself. So pretty much his last act on this earth was, as you say, to take two innocent lives and ruin many many others for nothing more than his own temporary grandstanding.
It's times like this that you hope there is a God and a hell.

Obama trying to be sensible and push for tighter gun control laws but when half your country are idiots, what's the point.
Have to try though I guess.

"Walmart, the world's largest retailer, said on Thursday (local time) it would no longer stock semi-automatic weapons".
(from the ABC news site)
A step in the right direction, but really ... whoopee, this is how far they have to go.

Re: Another school shooting in the USA
One of the things I dislike about the US is the ridiculous litigation. But suing everyone in the chain of responsibility as often and ridiculously as possible may be the only way to go. A gradually stacked high supreme court can be unstacked, legislation can be unlegislated and representatives bought.
I agree Obama has been weak but his situation generally can be best highlighted by this issue. If he can't do anything about a problem the rest of the world thinks belongs in the realm of the "bleeding obvious", what can he do on more complex matters?

Re: Another school shooting in the USA
Obama has only been as strong as Congress has allowed him to be, and when a lot of them are closet racist Republicans who automatically push back ANYTHING a black President does, Obama is going to struggle to get a lot of things done.
In summary- Yeah, by and large America is a f*cked up place.
Oh, and God help us all if Donald Trump is elected President. I can honestly see him causing another civil war with some of the immigration reforms he is proposing.
