The shooter has been named. The name is considerably harder to spell than Smith or Jones.

To answer Lardy's question, in light of the above the DT will have no compunction whatever in calling him every name under the sun, and making sure he does so at least as loudly and with at least as many cameras in front of him as that other bloke, the actual, current President (and he'll make sure he gets in first to make Obama look like a copycat).

We may as well all get used to it. Trump is Melbourne Cup day's surest winner.

US media is naming the Orlando shooter as Omar Mateen, a 30-year-old US citizen from Port St. Lucie, Florida, whose parents are from Afghanistan, citing two unidentified law enforcement officers. What I'm saying is this and Lindt, may have happened without IS. The extent to which the existence of IS and it's prop arm may have influenced the events we'll unfortunately never know. Calling these things terror events obviously benefits some sections of some governments.

I have to say , I tend to agree. What better way to get noticed than to say the words "ISIS" while holding an assault rifle. Man Monis clearly wasn't terror related and used ISIS as a means of attracting attention.

Just to point out the bleeding obvious after the Orlando shootings: since the Sandy Hook massacre of school-children there have been 998 shootings causing death in the USA. Two of them have involved shooters who were identifiably Muslim. Several hundred involved the sort of weapons that have no place in a civil society. Oh yes, and 998 of the shooters were male. So is the most serious problem Islam, or should more attention be given to ludicrous gun laws or masculinity?

A shockingly rare event still in the UK. That's no consolation, at all. But in the US, it seems shootings are part of a far too widely accepted fabric of life.

Why is it still going on? Yes, I know the ways of the powerful and rich gun lobbies there. I know the Constitutional Amendment (2nd), drafted for completely different times, a different society (in militia preparation for British invasion), and vastly different technologies (your basic single-shot rifle, not assault weapons with long-range machine-gun capabilities).

But still it's the same question.
