Re: bushfire and weather thread
Bushfires so late in the season are yet more evidence of climate change, especially man-induced through burning of fossil fuels.
Agree about controlling population growth. Perhaps we need to cut family benefits, especially if there are more than two children. The one child policy in China was a sensible way of dealing with something that threatened the country at a time of unmanageable population growth.

As a fossil myself, I have strong reservations about the toasting of fossil fuels.

Re: bushfire and weather thread
I prefer to take a far less dystopic view of the future, h.
I find it very unproductive to constantly harp about "climate change" but offer no real practical solutions. Poor little Aus can make fark all difference to global CO2 emissions against the giant consumers of China, the US and India.
We, the little man, can but live our lives in as "clean" a fashion as possible, making no difference to the grim predictions. I probably use less electricity in my house than most other houses in my suburb and surrounds. I know my energy bill is a shitload cheaper than any of my neighbours and mates.
I wake each day, suck in the crisp air and admire the blue sky, thinking about the day's activities, rather than mope about stressing about what may or may not happen with the climate in the next 50 to 100 years.
My only source of stress these days is the constant Govt tinkering with superannuation, and, of course, the vagaries of the Aus cricket team and their fortunes.

Australia - a land of weather extremes.
Just days after Tathra on the NSW South Coast burnt to the ground in a raging bushfire, there are flood warnings out in the Hunter, just 600 kms away.

Amazing scenes in Cairns, my old stamping ground.
500 mm rain overnight. Thankfully, no loss of life.

Dengue and leptospirosis 'plagues' to follow.

I've stupidly crossed a flooded Vic river. Coming home from the pub on Sunday (in a cab) scared fark out of me.
Cairns really turned it on over the weekend.

Sydney is breaking records, but Victoria and South Australia's weather has exhibited anomalous patterns too.

Flannery is many things but a buffoon is not one of them.
Met him a couple of times via a rello of his I knew. The geologist dad of an ex Mrs H was one of his mentors.
There is a nice docco based on the Inverloch fossil finds where the then alive but struggling dad of ex Mrs H appears. Flannery was very gentle and nice with him. He's a decent bloke Skully, whatever you think of the science.
Rain predicted for mid week in Melbourne. We've had one decent rain here in three months.

Being sued by the Wagner family (owners of the Lockyer Valley quarry that collapsed during the 2011 floods) who he accused of criminal acts that cost lives at the hands of the massive flood.

No bitterness, just a statement of fact. Flannery was ridiculously over the top about his climate change predictions, and refuses to admit it.
