As I said on the other thread - this innings has seen him go pas Waugh, Sobers and Boycott on the runs list (in the same number of tests as Sobers) and equal Bradman and Kallis on the tons list.

Incredible that there are so many flat tracks these days.

"As I said on the other thread - this innings has seen him go pas Waugh, Sobers and Boycott on the runs list (in the same number of tests as Sobers)"
How many innings? Being an opening bat, he gets a second hit every time Australia do.
Every time I start contemplating replacements for Hayden he produces the goods, not just one innings to save his ass, but consistently over the next few Tests. That happened before Oval 2005, midway through last summer, and again in this series.

"Being an opening bat, he gets a second hit every time Australia do." and faces the oppositions best two fast bowlers with a full tank & a new ball.

Well, Sobers had a better average, so more innings than him; and Waugh's average was lower, so not as many as him. Not as many dismissals, anyway. Although there is a theory about not outs diminishing the average, you might like to hear it some time ...

Aye, methinks Nerky is being a tad churlish. My only disappointment with his fine knock was the inevitable arrogant tossing away of his innings.Mick Sawyer wrote:"Being an opening bat, he gets a second hit every time Australia do." and faces the oppositions best two fast bowlers with a full tank & a new ball.

Re: Another flat-track ton to Matty
Of MTB's 29 tons - 16 have ended with him being dismissed between 117 and 138.
He also has 100*, 101*, 102 x 2, 103, 110 and 111.
I'm pretty sure that after the Don, he has about the best innings per ton rate.
Imagine what his average would be like if he had a Subi or even Ponting-like ruthlessness for a big score.

It's his big weakness and it leaves him open to getting dropped in leaner patches.
He really does play carelessly after reaching his ton.

Dunno about you lot but I'd rather a bloke have a cluster of scores around 110 than a cluster of scores around 12 any day.

Hayden is class - consistently performs when it matters. The only problem is the discrepancy between his home/away average.

He has a good away record in the WI and India and hasn't played in Pakistan. The obvious holes are his England and Saf performances over 10 tests but even in England he has rarely out and out failed - he has a stack of scores in the 30s and 40s.

Nope if you are not talking about just Australian players. On top of my head I know at least 3 West Indian greats had better innings per ton numbers:
George Headly: 4.0 (10 tons per 40 innings)
Clyde Walcott: 4.93 (15 tons per 74 innings)
Everton Weekes: 5.4 (15 tons from 81 innings)
Hayden: 5.72 (29 tons in 166 innings)

Can't fully agree with that. Didn't he ruthlessly beat the sh!t out of Zimboks to grab the highest individual run record?
