Do you think the bat with a flat back is a good idea?

Dave Warner, and a bunch of other NSW players are set to use a bat with a mostly flat back in their next t20 match, allowing for more 'reverse' shots.
The bat complies with the laws of the game as they stand.
I don't think its a good idea, part of the charm of the game is the back of the bat being angled.

"I don't care, but it'll make it hard for kids to call 'hills' or 'flats' when they don't have a coin to toss."
no change in this regard, judging from the news clips. They'll probably talk it up as a big deal and no-one will use it to play a shot.

Just saw it on Fox and it's not flat all the way down the back, just the bottom half.

And if the dubbers who use it 'go well' then it'll be available to the general public.
At around $399 a bat.

Didn't Tony Greig and and a few others use a similar bat? - St Peter as I recall. Don't remember Greigy playing many switch hits though!

We used to call ot "hills" or "valleys" rather than "hills or "flats".

I hope they've improved the pick-up since the last experiment with double-sided bats in the 1970s (Ray East used to use one, amongst others). I'm not much of a swordsman but the bat that I had a feel of was shocking.

Zat,
The shape of the bat may have stayed for the same for most of the time that Test Match cricket has been played, but that's only about a third of the time that the playing of cricket in general has been widespread, so actually, the current wedge shaped design is itself only a recent innovation.

Bats with scoops, lumps and bumps have been around for the last 30 odd years. Fearnley even produced one with holes drilled through. So I can't see this new version being anything out of the ordinary

Time to test out the virtues of a flat alluminium bat, methinks!
