England's 50 over squads
Here you go: read and inwardly digest:
England squad to play Ireland: Eoin Morgan (capt), Gary Ballance, Ravi Bopara, Danny Briggs, Jos Buttler, Michael Carberry, Steven Finn, Chris Jordan, Jamie Overton, Boyd Rankin, Ben Stokes, James Taylor, James Tredwell, Luke Wright
England squad to play Australia: Eoin Morgan (capt), Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler, Michael Carberry, Steven Finn, Chris Jordan, Jamie Overton, Kevin Pietersen, Boyd Rankin, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, James Tredwell, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright
At least there's no Dernbach

Re: England's 50 over squads
Why would you put Root anywhere near a JAMODI?
He was successful in the Ashes sitting on the back foot and valuing his wicket ...and looked awful when he tried anything else
Maybe he's in as a bowler and a Warner disruptor

Re: England's 50 over squads
So
Ballance Briggs & Taylor
v
Pietersen Root Trott
It seems they want to experiment a bit more v Ireland. They seem more reluctant to do so v Aus, so three Test players used there.
Alternatively, they don't want to play those three Test men unless it's necessary (v Aus it's always necessary, unless your name is Kerrigan). And perhaps want to try the other three out v Ireland, with an eye to possible Ashes squad inclusion??
Guessing at that last bit, obviously. The leap from 50 overs to Test backup is not an obvious one.

The Giles influence is most evident in the promotion of Big Boyd.

Jamie Overton!
I didn't expect him to get called up this soon, but he's clearly all over their radar. I reckon one of him or Jordan will go to Australia with the main Ashes squad.

He looks a world beater for three overs, then he runs out of gas.PeterCS wrote:The Giles influence is most evident in the promotion of Big Boyd.
I would have liked to have seen Ballance in the squad to play Australia as well. Still, continuing to bash the door down in County cricket may not be so bad for him.

There's a role for bowlers like that.Henry wrote:He looks a world beater for three overs, then he runs out of gas.PeterCS wrote:The Giles influence is most evident in the promotion of Big Boyd.
T20.
A dobber or tweaker can bowl his fourth over, if he hasn't got the opp all out yet.

Re: England's 50 over squads
I guess it's official, then: Chris Jordan's English.
Couple of interesting squads - nice to see a few new names get a go.

Re: England's 50 over squads
Probably because he averages 49.16 in ODIs, with a s/r or 86, and is good for 4-8 overs with the ball.embee wrote:Why would you put Root anywhere near a JAMODI?

Re: England's 50 over squads
No Willey, I've just noticed. That's a bit disappointing, after he smashed 160 off 100 balls the other day - even though bowling is his strong suit.
Re: England's 50 over squads
Willey's knock was obviously a top one, but it was against a pop-gun attack on a belter though.
Saying that, he was 6 away from the Northants record, in a 40-over comp, of 172. Which is pretty special.
As he said himself, best to stick him back in the oven for a year or so.
Lower representative cricket for England would do him no harm, though.

Re: England's 50 over squads
Taylor and Ballance are being treated pretty poorly by the selectors. What exactly are they going to find out about them in one game against Ireland?
No Dernbach though, that's one positive... just one format to eradicate him from now it seems!

Re: England's 50 over squads
Aust are even worst at T20 than they are at Tests so England will clean those up. We might have a chance in the Yamodi's but a lot will depend on the selectors. If they insist on playing over-rated wannabe's like Ahmed then you'll prolly win those too.Basil wrote:I'm actually looking forward to this JAMODI series. perhaps I'm sad.
