I just saw the best catch I have ever seen
In 35 years of watching cricket, bar none.
It will be on YT soon enough no doubt. In the meanwhile.

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, OUT, this is a blinder! this is madness.. this is the maddest baddest ever catch.. AB did what AB does.. Whacks the short of length delivery to deep midwicket, where Lynn lines himself up for the catch.. but he slips.. Despite that, he somehow straightens his body on the ground, keeps an eye on the ball, arches his body back and takes a catch sitting down.. freakish catch.. KKR are stealing this one.. Lynn is a hero.. watch that catch to believe that..
AB de Villiers c Lynn b Vinay Kumar 11 (12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 91.66

You've bigged it up so much that it better be.
This is the benchmark for me:

Same league, Lynn's catch just shades it IMO. Could be my conformation bias though.
Meanwhile the video's coming up and being pulled down on YT. May have to wait before it's finally there.

Re: I just saw the best catch I have ever seen
Well, it's obviously a fair effort, but I'm not sure it can really be put in the same league as the Collingwood catch. Far more time to react, 2 handed, not actually that difficult a catch if he hadn't farked up and ended up on his knees, fair bit of time to steady himself even when he was on his knees.
Yeah, pretty decent but f*cking miles from being the best catch I've seen.

It's good, but not that good.
What of Wundke's catch? Jordan Silk's recent blinder?

Yeah, he misjudged it in the first place, and made it look more spectacular than it should have been. Very good recovery, mind.
I'm with Vilks. That Collingwood catch gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. Especially as it was probably the moment I started to think England might have a chance of winning back the Ashes in 2005. Everything was running our way in the early part of that ODI series.

I still rate 'my' catch higher than Collingwood's. He had more time, yes, but he was on the boundary going back, taking the catch far behind him and he still managed to stay inside the line.

There are so many great catches that it is impossible to say which is the best.

as taipan said
you can make a top 10 or even 20 and any one of them could be a worthy number 1

Re: I just saw the best catch I have ever seen
I'm probably biased towards the Collingwood catch but I genuinely can't think of a better one. Hayden absolutely creams it, his reaction says it all, it should have been a boundary. The speed that Collingwood reacts and the height he gets to is super human, the timing and execution had to be perfect and they were.
The crowd seem almost incredulous in their reaction to the replay, it's an absurdly brilliant catch and seems more implausible the more times I watch it.

I like this from AB.

Even though some of the close-in ones are spectacularly good, sometimes they are simply reflex, the boundary ones where the catcher has time can show how naturally athletic and coordinated some of these guys are.
The whole thing though is subjective in respect of which one is best.

Yeah, it's simple really. I remember everyone made a fuss about Lara getting 400, but it was simply hitting the cricket ball and running. And a hat trick is simply getting 3 wickets in 3 balls.Red wrote:I like this from AB.

Not sure what all the fuss is about.

Not comparing apples with apples there. Lara focussing for such a long period for 400 is not comparable to someone sticking a hand in the air hoping they can pull off a catch. Sometimes having to think about a catch or run a long way before being able to grab hold of it is an amazing feat in terms of judgement, balance and athleticism. That's not to say the freakish, close-in catches aren't great but they are no better than the boundary ones simply because the guy has more time.

Awesome concentration for the very last ball before lunch. Gower was a key wicket too.

Old Mitchell Johnson - not particularly impressive in the Ashes - just ran up and hurled a leather thing at someone wielding a piece of wood. Meh.

Don't get why you're being so defensive.
