George Moore dies aged 84
He rode 119 Group 1 winners, still an Australian record. I only just caught the end of his riding career but he sure was a legend.

Australia's greatest ever jockey George Moore has died aged 84 after a long illness.
Born in Mackay in north Queensland, Moore began riding at the age of 15 and moved to Sydney in the 1940s where he and the late TJ Smith began a formidable jockey-trainer partnership.
Known as "Cotton Fingers" for his ability to control a horse with the reins, Moore rode 119 Group One winners in his career, an Australian record which still stands.
In the 1950s and 60s, Moore rode successfully in Europe, returning home in 1971, where he won the Victoria Derby aboard Classic Mission at his final race ride.
He then became a successful trainer in Hong Kong, winning the premiership 11 times.
In 1986, Moore became the first jockey ever inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame and was an inaugural inductee to the Racing Hall of Fame in 2001.
He is immortalised by the George Moore Medal, which is presented annually to Sydney's outstanding jockey.

I know nothing about horse racing but I'd like to know why some jockeys are considered better than others? Surely it's 99% about the horse and 1% about the jockey? Surely there are some basic jockey skills that you need to have (being light, knowing how to ride, hitting the horse etc) and then the rest is up to the horse?

I love the way you go around telling other people what they know. It's very classy.

A horse race is mainly about the the ability of the horse but to me the outstanding jockeys are those that can judge the pace of a race precisely as well as the ability to understand where the gaps might appear.
............. and not fall off.

Put a dust cart driver in Alonzo's car and how do you reckon he'd get on?
