Phillip Hughes dies, aged 25
We were discussing this in the Aussie domestic cricket thread, but it feels a bit too serious to be mixed in with updates from other grounds.
The latest is Hughes is undergoing surgery at St Vincent's - which means he could have a clot on the brain.

Re: Phillip Hughes dies, aged 25
I heard this on the news on the way to work. How did it happen in this era of helmets?

Apparently he was struck on the back of the neck, just under the helmet. There's grainy CA web-streamed footage of it.

Sean Abbott usually bowls around 130kph and look what damage a ball from him has done. You wonder what would have happened had it been Mitchell Johnson or Dale Steyn bowling.

Re: Phillip Hughes dies, aged 25
From News Limited reporter at the scene, Ben McClellan:
St Vincent's Hospital spokesman David Faktor said Hughes was on life support.
"He underwent a set of scans to establish the extent of his injuries and then a decision was made to perform surgery," he said.
"He arrived in a critical condition and remains in a critical condition. He is undergoing surgery as we speak.
"I understand they intubated him at the scene. He is the best of hands and surrounded by a leading team."
Mr Faktor said he's family was by his side.
"He's got loved ones here at the hospital," he said

The news said they put up a tarp around him when they were treating him on the field. That's what they do with horses and suggests he may have needed resuscitating.

Zat SMSed me just after it happened. Crikey, looks a nasty outcome for a fairly innocuous looking incident. I flicked over to ABC radio after getting the message from Zoggy and a lady who was at the ground was speaking to Richard Glover and said she was quite overcome with the horror of it all. She said he was hit under the helmet on the neck, swayed, then just face-planted and didn't move. She said Dave Warner looked particularly worried.
Good luck to the little bloke. Fingers crossed.

I think the tarp is used differently when "treating" horses.

As much as we fans dislike Hughes there seems a fair bit of love from the players for him (reading the twitter comments).Warner and Clarke are supposedly good mates of his and who knows who else is.

Re: Phillip Hughes dies, aged 25
just the stupid arbitrary nature of life..being struck in precisely the wrong spot
A bloke I knew died after being struck by a ball bowled by a medium pacer in the 80s. The guy was struck in the throat effectively severing his jugular...died almost instantly...ironically he was wearing a helmet and had encouraged all of us to use them...
The Hughes events has brought all this back and my initial thought was whether he had been struck in the same place.
Never again will I make fun of the likes of Steyn and Jimmy Anderson for their pronounced movements to leg when facing quick bowlers

Aye. If the worst happens - Gods forbid - you'd wonder if they wouldn't call off the first Test.

Re: Phillip Hughes dies, aged 25
Statements from Cricket Australia:
Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Phil Hughes right now. We are also thinking of his family, team mates and friends in the Australian cricket family.
“His welfare is our highest priority . We’re also naturally concerned about all of those involved in today’s game and will be giving them our utmost support.”
Australian Cricketers’ Association Chief Executive Officer Alastair Nicholson also sent his support to Hughes.
"We were obviously shocked to learn of the seriousness of the incident involving Phil. While we have faith that he's receiving the best available treatment, the situation will impact his family, friends, and those directly involved on the field. The ACA is therefore working closely with CA to arrange the appropriate counselling for those affected. Naturally our thoughts are with him and we wish him well from all the ACA members."

I doubt it. After what happened with the West Indies, the BCCI would probably ensure Hughes isn't the only one should CA call off the test.

Maybe not but seriously no one's heart would be in it.
Anyway, hopefully not an issue.

5:08pm: Fairfax Media has been told that Hughes is out of surgery where doctors worked to relieve the pressure on his brain.
He remains in an induced coma with the success of the surgery not to be know for sometime.
