Re: Football World Cup 2014
Fat Frank's actually been documented as one of the most intelligent among English footballers... I know, it's not saying a lot. When Clarke Carlisle is supposedly top of that list and you hear him commentate it sums it up...

It is stupid in its sheer deperation.
We know Messi is the best club player in the world. That is undisputed.
But the fantasy that you have concoted in your head regarding his performances in this World Cup is embarrassing. You have exaggerated his efforts and their effects on the outcome of the sudden death matches.
Your arguments apply to every other player maker in the tournament. But you seem to forget there were other greater performances in this WC because of your obsession with Messi. Your views have clearly been clouded by Messi's past great performances for Barca and not Argentina.

He scored the first penalty under pressure?
Of course this is relevant, isn't it?
Fark me, LLL. What no mention of the Argie keeper or the shit penalties taken by the Dutch? Are they not relevant. I guess not because it is all about Messi.
The Argies got through against Holland because of the brilliance of Messi? Are you kidding?

Re: Football World Cup 2014
Can't really be chewed getting into a big row over the issue, but I do feel that anyone quickly scanning Lara's post would get the impression that Argentina were by far the outstanding team, that Messi was head & shoulders above every other player at this WC, and that Dello was talking through his hoop. It certainly came over that way to me.
Well neither statement is true. The award of the golden ball was not universally acclaimed as correct, and has been publicly criticised as downright wrong by several people infinitely more qualified to judge than any of us on here. Not least by two previous winners of said award who happen to be compatriots of Lionel Messi. One of them is Mario Kempes.
The other one is Diego Maradona, who's award has never been remotely questioned by anyone to this day as far as I know.
So, whilst not going so far as saying laras argument with Dello was stupid, the whole tone came over as somewhat OTT, and not really backed up with concrete evidence. I didn't see the game itself as I was badly, but weren't Germany the winners in spite of Messis brilliance and Argentinas complete superiority ?

It was the cynical fouling of the Germans that won the game.

I'm sorry but your entire post is piss in the wind and you don't seem to have grasped anything I've written or that it was in response to Dello saying he'd done nothing in the knockout games.
Kind Regards
Growler - agreed that there's a debate to be had, like I mentioned. The post was in response to the outrage at Messi being one of the top contenders for the golden ball and supposedly doing nothing. Also I wouldn't listen to anything Maradona says. Talks almost as much sh*te as Pele and his wasting of a supremely talented generation of players at WC 2010 through shambolic management and idiotic tactics and selections is a crime.

Re: Football World Cup 2014
Yeah, guess his appointment last time around wasn't exactly based on his tactical expertise, just the idea that his presence could inspire them to victory. Didn't quite work.
Anyway, Lahm quits Germany at just 30, seemingly not a snap decision after winning it either. Could easily have had another World Cup in him but leaving it to the next generation (and probably a 40-year-old Klose) to defend it in Russia (or wherever...)

Big, big loss. One of the top 5 players in the world at present. (And that even if you are attacker-biased, as most of those assessments are.)

Entered World Cup football with a spectacular tournament-opening goal on home soil in 2006, and left it as the victorious captain. Some way to enter and leave the big international stage, the middle bit wasn't too bad either.

Thuram and Makelele both retired and came back for tournaments. Can see Lahm doing the same.

Monumental blunder by the Saudi keeper in the qualifier in Adelaide tonight. He slipped and kicked the ball straight to Tomi Juric, who controlled it with one touch and left foot volleyed it into the unguarded net!!!
1-0 Aus early in the match.

A ponderous Aus ATM, and we lose the ball in possession and are punished with a slick finish by the Saudis. 1-1.
