Re: England v India, 5th Test, The Oval, 15-19 August, 2014
Well, retiring players here who go into umpiring it appears often have to sit on the FC reserve list for a few years awaiting retirements from the main list (where most go on until 65 it seems), then it probably takes several more years for them to make the international list. Few probably make it before the age of about 45, although the occasional one with significant potential might be fast-tracked? The media or coaching certainly provide "easier" career options for retiring players though, certainly those at the very highest level. How many with significant Test careers have become umpires?

Peter Wiley, John Hampshire and Paul Reiffel spring to mind. And Venkat.

Current Elite Panel:
Davis/Aus/age 62/53 Tests
Oxenford/Aus/54/20
Tucker/Aus/49/33
Reiffel/Aus/48/10
Gould/Eng/56/40
Illingworth/Eng/50/9
Llong/Eng/45/25
Kettleborough/Eng/41/22
Bowden/NZ/51/76
Dar/Pkn/46/89
Erasmus/SA/50/25
Dharmasena/SL/43/25
Looking at the age profile there's not too many who have been fast-tracked to the top in recent times. How many played international cricket? Reiffel, Dharmasena, Illingworth, any others?

Anyway, Gambhir's Test career in all probability ends with a silly run-out just as the rain comes down... that's clearly what Woakes is in the side for!

We've got better than a proven failure in Gambhir. Even Mukund was better in 2011. Lumping Pankaj at opener would be an equivalent choice.

Root's 5th Test century before turning 24 equals the mark of Len Hutton - only Cook (7) managed more at that age for England. He can't challenge that one though as he will be 24 by the time of England's next Test.

We must also remember that Hutton had only just turned 23 at the outbreak of WW2.

This is pretty abject from the Bannies.
Reminds me of England in Aust last year or Aust in India.
Other than Saf, can any team play away from home any more?

Sri Lanka did pretty well over here earlier this summer, even if they were facing a rather shellshocked England. Hard to say if the SL and India tours had been reversed in the calendar, whether the outcomes would have been as well.

We had the same situation over here last summer, with only four umpires eligible (with Benny Hill in place of Silly Billy being the difference from the current list). And surprisingly enough, poor umpiring made the headlines for much of the series.G.Wood wrote:There is not much choice for Ashes an series.beamer wrote:Current Elite Panel:

How crap must all the umpires from India, West Indies, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe be, as well as the second string men from the other non-Ashes countries, if they can't force their way into that shower of shite?
