In 103 tests, he averages 42. Flat track/Bangladesh and Zimbabwe bully you might say? Well no. He averages 45 against South Africa, including 54 IN South Africa, 42 against Australia, including 49 IN Australia. He also averages 36 in England, which I think you'll find is a pretty good record for a touring opening batsman in England over the last 10 years.
So yes, he's most renowned for his T20 exploits, but his test batting shouldn't be ignored when it comes to assessing his overall career.

Fantastic bat, great to watch. Scares the tripe out of any bowling attack.

Meh. Too hit and miss. Not what you want from an opener when you are a weak middle order.

hmnn....same applies to Warner on those grounds
think Crystal may have taken test cricket more seriously had the WI Board been competent and remunerated the players appropriately...
Personally I really enjoy watching him bat

Meh. Agree with Mr K about being too hit and miss.
Gayle's okay on his day (far too infrequent).
I'd rate Virendra Sehwag and even possibly Sanath Jayasuriya marginally ahead of Gayle for sheer batting explosions.

He's a good player in all formats, but we've seen him at his best in Tests too infrequently.
