Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
FFS, now Larissa Waters has to resign because she was born in Canada, moved here when she was 11 months old but never denounced her Canadian citizenship.
To lose one Deputy Leader like this is unlucky, to lose two is careless.

I was checking out some of the history behind all this and came across literally hundreds of news articles, petitions and websites (OK some of them were really extreme, bordering on a lot of the 'paths) giving voice to this issue.

Nah. Home grown loonies. Few I'd come across in a previous life but some recent whackjobs. My point is that this ain't new in the etherverse and you or your staff or the organization you represent would have to be either criminal or criminally negligent to fall foul.

Spot on.
And of course Abetz sorted any chance of proof he was a boy from Brazil.

Labor tried it on with Abetz some time ago & fell flat on their faces. It seems that under German law, once you take up citizenship of another country you automatically lose German citizenship.
Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
Pinks and Blues both slagging off the idiot Greens. I guess both parties have now checked all their MPs citizenship status.

Now there is some risk that Waters' replacement, Andrew Bartlett, also won't qualify as he was working for a uni at the time.

Way to go mum!
"Senator Canavan was told last week by his mother that she had signed a form giving him dual citizenship through his Italian-born grandmother.
Sources said Senator Canavan was not aware of his mother’s actions and that she had only informed him after seeing the demise of Larissa Waters and Scott Ludlam.

Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
My days of roamin' in the gloamin' are long gone.
Would happily swap citizenship positions with Canavan (the SKWarne of politics it seems).
And yes while a 2 millenia long established minor Roman poet, the stronzo Italian Government refuses to give me citizenship. This terrible state of affairs led me to propose actual marriage to an ex Mrs H who has dual citizenship.
Meanwhile we laughed at TGM and we should laugh even more heartily at this Qld xill who has hung his poor mum out to dry. At least TGM was original.

Maybe the high court will take the chance to redefine section 44?

High Court is pretty conservative and less likely to make a modern reading of the constitution

There are a couple of words that could, if interpreted a certain way, either condemn him or exonerate him. It's not as clear cut as the pollies seem to think. And some of our most conservative judges have thrown black letter law out the window. Isaacs I'll forgive, he helped write the bloody thing. Barwick is just a thunderqunt.
That said, this latest excuse stinks just a little bit and we've already had Barnaby out him as having had a conversation with Mummy.

Apparently* the I-tie consulate is now saying that as soon as Canavan took a political office, his Italian citizenship lapsed.

Which wouldn't save him from not being an Italian citizen at the time he ran for Parliament.
Meanwhile, it's all getting a bit much for poor Barnaby:
“It was without a shadow of a doubt that we never believed that this would be the chain of events, because this has happened without his consent,” Mr Joyce told a press conference in Canberra this morning.
“He never signed a form, and, of course, one would presume that if something happens without your knowledge, and without your consent, then it’s probably an invalid process.
“That would stand to reason. My grandmother is English. I’m working on the presumption I’m not English. I’ve never been to England, and Matt’s never been to Italy and his mother was never born in Italy.”
Awkwardly, Mr Joyce did in fact visit England last month, laying flowers near London Bridge in tribute to victims of the Borough Market terror attack.
