Very smart declaration. He noticed the Slogger had been off for a bit and now the stoopid Westie can't open the batting cos he's been off for too long. FFS, what a drongo!!!
If this was chess, we've been checkmated.
I reckon 3-20 is on here.

Warner off the field having his shoulder de-chipped when the dec came, therefore not allowed to open acc to ABC...now looks like a genius of timing

Some seriously shithouse bowling by Aust there. WTF was Starc trying to do?
Great declaration though.

Why's that?
If it's true, I wonder if Faf knew that.

Unless he would have declared anyway, that's pretty poor form.

Vermin's first-up no ball remains the only run of the innings....De Kok got snooker-cued in the middle of the last over, could have hurt a finger

Alternatively, if Warner's shoulder is too sore to field one moment it's hardly likely to be good enough to bat properly 10 minutes later....esp batting DW-style

What a fantastic day's Test cricket.
How exciting is it to see a 21 year old Rabada bowl to a 20 year old Renshaw. Could be a parallel career for the ages.'
And just quietly, how good was it to see some classic opening batting from Aust under pressure.

Could be...he's big and fair, but nowhere near as ugly as Damian Monkhorst

So reinventing opening batting wasn't the answer?

As We All Know, this day-night pink-ball caper is fine for batsmen up till sunset, but an absolute bugger afterwards.
Except for the times when all the first team in's top order except one cave in in daylight, but afterwards Faf, various bowlers, a bloke in his first Test and another one who didn't even know he was opening until five minutes before, between them click over 100 and cough up two wickets.

It took 39 balls before the first run off the bat of either batsmen.
What is the record for the start to an innings?

As noted above, great day's cricket.
Faf showed resilience; he would have considered it sweet revenge. The Aussie bowlers prospered more under the sun than in twilight or in moonshine. Faf gambled on the declaration but didn't get the result he wanted. The openers showed patience.

Did Faf tell the crowd to suck it up?
Well, a sporting declaration, but (as it happened) it didn't pay off. As it turned out, another 20 runs might have been more useful if it's to be a low-scoring Test.
You never can tell. Spiced up the game, for sure.
