"Former Australian cricket coach John Buchanan has unveiled a radical plan to overhaul the sport, including scrapping the traditional Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and the New Year's Test in Sydney.

Fairfax Media can reveal Buchanan has also offered a seven-point plan, which he wants Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association to embrace in a bid to end the pay dispute over a new memorandum of understanding that threatens this summer's Ashes series.

His suggestion to scrap the Boxing Day and New Years tests is ridiculous, but I do think the Australian calendar needs to be tweaked. They should play more tests in January and even into February, and get the ODIs over and done with before Christmas.

Sooner or later there will also be a push by the sponsors and broadcasters to have likes of Smith, Warner, and Starc involved in the Big Bash, so that they're getting their money's worth.
