He is having a 'mare.
Passing on the gloves from mare to filly?
Not sure if Tim thinks he's still skipper. Doesn't seem to call most of the shots. The Return of the Empire?
Smith seems to be the de facto captain.

beamer wrote:They’re not going to even get to tea, are they... typical England match-saving “effort”.
Saying “that’s the way he plays” for someone like Roy is fair enough when it’s a first innings perhaps, some days it will come off... but we’re trying to bat out a day’s play, runs barely matter at all. There’s no need at all for big shots.
Joel Wilson has muppet of the match sewn up though. I think he’s equalled the individual record for decisions overturned, but the pair are one short of the overall match aggregate record. You’re letting the side down, Aleem... anyway, we need home umpires back ASAP. Wilson is scheduled to do the Lord’s Test as well, any chance the captains will collectively raise an objection?
Captains shouldn’t have to. ICC should do it automatically

They won’t do, being the spineless ICC, and the fact they’ve just promoted him to replace Ravi, who surely wasn’t this bad!
An umpire’s call saves him from the outright record. Only a matter of time...

I think there are two matches in the subcontinent with 11 overturns, one was Dharmasena and someone else and the other involved Ravi I think.

Anyway, that’s game over. No chance of taking it to tea now. A whitewash awaits.
Stokes and Buttler might as well just give the crowd a bit of entertainment. The next two are walking wickets at the moment and then it’s just Woakes and the tail.

From the BBC text commentary:
Spot on... picking county journeymen like Denly, for example, and some of the others we’ve tried off the back of a half decent county season or two, you’re picking someone who’s probably already reached his ceiling, and has a decade of bad habits from the county game to overturn.
What happened to identifying players through the A/Lions system, and letting them learn in the Test arena? Some will fail, but others will thrive on it. Wait until they’ve had a season averaging 50 in CC div 1 and you’ve wasted half a career. Maybe we’ll get back to focusing on developing Test players now. Or maybe not, with the SixteenPointFour16.4 Cup looming next season.
It just feels like England have gone away from identifying talented younger players with high upside, whose game could be really suited to Test level with hard work on what they have already.

Well, at least he will be gone soon, has done fark all for the Test side. But what about Ed Smith as chief selector, he benefited from one of those county form hunches as a player at a time when it wasn’t so fashionable - and predictably failed. Shouldn’t he be learning from his own experience?PeterCS wrote:^ Bayliss, innit.

I think Root and Paine will lodge a complaint.
Meanwhile Buttler is skittled. Well done Paddy.

I got a bet on 5-0 at around 18/1 earlier. It’s like buying money, if we can’t win here we can’t win anywhere. Only obstacle is a washout or the Aussies putting their feet up in a dead rubber.

Tea? They’ll be lucky to make drinks now.
Monty’s a better batsman than Moeen now. That applies whether it’s Panesar, Python, Don, or the fat Scottish golfer.
