Excellent bowling though.

And Warner has redeemed his earlier misdemeanours (well, batting and fielding) with some great snatches.

England batting? Well, a furri comment would be enough.

Have to bowl them out for sub-50 to have any chance. It’s not completely impossible.

You could say that about pretty much every player in the top seven. No one looks in form except for perhaps Stokes and Burns. And Stokes played a terrible, tired shot today.

Presumably a big clearout is on the cards once the Ashes are gone? Forget the fact we could theoretically draw the series.

This is England, remember. They’ll claim “confidence is the players picked to turn things around.”

There will probably be one change........it’s a shame. I thought Ed Smith might be a very good selector, but he’s basically just picked the ODI side for tests, give or take a Burns or Jennings........

Well, thankfully we lose Bayliss automatically. So that's a scintilla.

If there's any sense of decency, Ed Smith should be considering his position before too long, also. Yes, I know he's new. But what has he added?

I still maintain if they picked the ODI side and told them to just go out there and get 300 off 50 overs, rather than being caught between two approaches, it might come off a lot of the time.

So - regardless of the result here - who makes way for Smith, who makes way for Starc?

I liked his early selections. Buttler and Rashid at the time seemed like bold, nerveless selections that were based around talent and potential rather than weight of county performances.

Problem seems to be that Root and Bayliss see, to be in very different wavelengths. I expect more to come out about it this once Bayliss finishes at the end of the summer. From what I can gather they see things very differently, but ultimately Bayliss let’s Root have the final say with pretty much everything. This means Bairstow instead of Foakes keeping, Roy opening instead of down the order, Moeen for a couple of tests too many when Leach was bowling well....these are all Root decisions, all Root ‘instincts and feelings’....... None of them have come off. He should be held accountable.

Bayliss will probably go after this Test, as may Root.

We might as well wrap Joffrey in cotton wool until NZ...

You mean wrap him in cotton wool until we can find a captain with half a clue about managing his bowlers?

Root has enough credit in the tank to stay on, yet.

Who'd captain if they did drop him? Surely not Stokes?
