He knew batting first was a big bonus on this wicket actually.

Who'd captain if they did drop him? Surely not Stokes?
Rory Burns led Surrey to the county championship a couple of years ago.
That would be an extraordinary elevation.
Broad is the other candidate, I suppose.

Pretty even game really, with the Poms likely to put on a few for the 7th wicket and the odious Broad sure to carve a few runs away from the comfort of square leg.
Nothing like an even game and Broad is actually a lovely guy. I have met him and his dad along with a few other ex-England cricketers in London. Stuart is a fine fella.

Re: England Skipper predicament
The trouble is (all hypothetical, by the way, as I can't see Root quitting or being pushed until the end of the series at best) - if you follow the usual two principles that you've not only got to pick your best available marshaller of human resources, but one of the safest, i.e. most established players in the team in his own right ... there are precious few of them at the moment.
Burns is a gritty little battler, but he has been shown up as weak against the bouncer. And perhaps the moving ball, too. Buttler is bright and able, but his batting is virtually a non-starter at the moment. Stokes is a flare-up waiting to happen. And quicks rarely make great captains.

Root surely has to fall on his sword if England lose this

110 for 18 now, this isn’t Test cricket, it’s a turkey shoot.
England as i said within these pages a month ago or so should stick to the 20 and 50 over games they are good at. They should have won the last test actually but ran out of time, such is the format and the weather we get. The one time recently they outplayed the opposition time ran out for a bore draw. A result we should never see in a professional game in many peoples' view including mine.
As for this test, the ashes were surrenedered this very morning on a plate.
Bring on the 50 over series, it's more fun, we are better at it and going by bums on seats, we as a nation prefer it.

If only Eoin Morgan was still half good at the longer for, of the game.....as it is, I think he averages around 10 in first class cricket for Middlesex since 2015......

I blame Brexit and Wilberforce.
The left probably do blame Trump, Johnson and Farage.
The England team could do with a bit of their country-loyalty and determination actually.

His lack of desire to comment on and especially abuse people he doesn't know for one thing, just people he sees on a tv or computer screen.
More importantly, he was a friendly man who along with his dad Chris was genuinely interested for example in my weekend cricket team in north London and it made for a great evening with Randall and Gooch and Tufnell also present. Broad is a nice guy. People make too many assumptions from the comfort of computer chairs.

Randall and Gooch I will give you as very decent men.
If you think one night out with Broad gives you an insight into his character greater than someone who's watched him play 50-60 Tests and give multiple interviews, you're sillier than I thought. He's a twat.

Good effort by Aust to bring this back to 50/50.
Still pretty confident that England will win in though. As the whole series has shown, Aust can string two partnerships together so one more wicket and England are right back in it.

Well, that was lucky. How did Root drop that?
Jeff Thomson wishes that Tavare and Miller might have managed similarly.
