Federer wins another slam

His 4th US Open and 12th slam overall.

Just imagine if he could win on clay . . .

Djokovic had five set points in the opening set of the final and two in the second but Federer dug deep when he needed to and held his nerve to win the title.

The Djokovic led 4-1 in the second and had two set points on the Federer serve at 6-5, but Federer hit back to win the tiebreak 7-2 and broke in the 10th game of the third to clinch victory.

Who says Federer can't play under pressure? That despite all this if he still won the final in straight sets, speaks volumes about his talent.

Yep, Nadal at clay is the only one left for him to conquer, besides Sampras's record.

Take away Nadal and Federer would have won 3 French Open's by now. Nadal is simply awesome on clay, though.

Is men's tennis at a low ebb or is Federer that much better? I don't follow the sport much, but it seems like there are few top male players at the moment . . .

The way Federer "lifted" when in trouble at the end of the second set would say that Federer is a Champion (in any era).

Interesting to look back and answer this 10 years down the line. Some interesting numbers from 1/4 hour on t'interweb.

2008-2017 = 10 years, x 4 GS/year = 40 GS finals = 80 finals places.

Mens game.

Federer - won 7, lost 8 = 15 appearances
Joker - won 12 lost 8 = 20 appearances
Nadal - won 13 lost 5 =18 appearances
Murray - won 3 lost 8 = 11 appearances
Warwinka won 3 lost 1 = 4 appearances
Cilic won 1 lost 1 = 2 appearances
Del Potro won 1

so, of the 80 finals "places", no fewer than 64 were occupied by just 4 players, with another 7 taken by the other 3 winners ...... leaving only 9 other spots for losing finalists, who were :-

Soderling x2, Tsonga, Ferrer, Roddick, Berdych,Nishikuri and Anderson.

10 years, 40 finals, 7 winners and 7 different losing players. The mens game has hardly been stronger.

Womens game, in contrast.

Serena Williams won 15
Sharapova and Clijsters won 3 apiece
Li Na, Kvitova, Azarenko, Kerber and Muguruza won 2 each
9 other players have each won one slam.

TBH, I gave up there and then,and didn't bother with losing appearances for winners, as the point was made.

17 different winners. Serena is so far ahead of the rest it's little short of embarrassing. She's an outstanding athlete amongst a load of utter dreck. Unlike the men's game, the ladies is in a poor state IMHO.
