Only, India seems to have more of them because of the population. And the fact that the Chinese mostly don't post in English.

That will settle down. What we are going through is a surge of nationalism / parochialism etc. due to all the pent up colonial and other legacies where India was invaded by one and all. I expect all this to settle down and get more mature as the youth find purposeful jobs and get away from that mentality of wanting to "show the world".

Should've warned you Josh - posting anything like "caste" triggers off a series of unwanted and undesirable reactions at the cellular and molecular level.

Some sensible discussion going on in this thread. Wonder how long before it gets trivial or becomes a trollathon.

The Western Australian isolation / mentality, Is that more due to the population in that part of Australia being different in orgin to the eastern states ie. not the Irish / Anglo Saxon heritage ??horace wrote:Josh Carney wrote:That is because a fair few cannot get over their regional, ethnic or caste based roots and identify themselves with this larger entity namely "India".HH_pink wrote:That 'Indian belittles Indian' is indeed true.

get a grip pinky..
some parts of australia do suffer from cultural and political insecurity...we also have a bit of the if it comes from overseas it must be better syndrome...we replaced one colonial master with a slavish obedience to US cultural norms and political positions...we have yet to fully realise our independence...the conundrum is to achieve indepence without going down the nationalistic road

The best (but by far the most impractical) solution is to abolish the very concept of nation states.

Not sure that will fix the problem. Humans by nature want to identify themselves with something. You cannot take away that. Only very few are able to rise about that.
At primitive levels it is identification with genetic roots, then it could be soething wider like a race or a religion or city or a region.
I am OK with identifying with the concept of a nation since it is more secular than identifying a caste or race or religion which can be very divisisive.
As long as nationalism does not not degenerate into a situation like the causes for WW1 it is fine .

Why do you think the concept of identifying with a nation is better than, say, caste or race or religion? I mean, why are these more divisive? Because I'm not so sure of that at all.

Re: Tendulkar breaks Bradman's record!!!!
Any kind of identification that breeds self righteousness is dangerous. Religion, caste or race based alignments are more prone to that. As civilisation has evolved and the country demarkations have thinned with the formation of Euro etc. the identification to a country and here I mean a secular country has become less and less dangerous. Even now there are many countries identifying to them is actually a pseudo identification to a religion. They are dangerous.HH_pink wrote:Why do you think the concept of identifying with a nation is better than, say, caste or race or religion? I mean, why are these more divisive? The point is you cannot stop human beings from identifying with something, that is the nature of them. In which case I choose the least harmful one.
We all have to indentify with humanity and humanvalues that is fundamental to a civilised society. But we also need something more, come to think of it Why to you support the Indian team ? Also identifying to a Country will help to be law abiding citizens of that Country.
