Which opener faced the most great fast bowlers of all time?
Athers faced Ambrose, Bishop, Walsh, Donald, Pollock, Waqar, Wasim, McGrath, McDermott, Gillespie, and Vaas.

I just got my original list out of the bin and I promise, I did have Vic Trumper on it. However, you're only allowed 10 choices on this poll.

Nah, just the pinnacle of laziness.

Never, in a million years, however many totally benign and lifeless pitch bullying he wants to do.
Re: Opening Batsmen
See, if I hadn't thrown Sehwag in, there wouldn't have been this debate!

Sunny - could have faced the likes:
Lillee, Thommo, Holding, Garner, Marshall, Imran, Roberts, Hadlee, Wasim, Botham, Snow, Croft, Willis, Reid not to mention lesser lights like Hogg, Alderman, Sarfraz, Dilley, Hughes, Old etc etc.

Trumper would have still been batting today.

Nah, he'd have got to about 120, got bored and deliberately give his wicket away to give someone else a go. Or so Wisden would have you believe.
Re: Opening Batsmen
Why is Virender Sehwag anywhere near the list? FTB who has barely scored a 2nd innings run in his life. He has acquired a vastly inflated reputation, and his place on any list of greats is preposterous.

He tanks no track with any juice in or any bowler with a bit of movement on the day.
Re: Opening Batsmen
I am in no doubt that Sehwag is better than Hobbs because Sehwag has scored 300 against bowlers like Steyn and Shoaib and Sami. Hobbs wouldn't have faced bowlers as good as that. In fact I would sum up my thoughts by saying 'east or west; Sehwag is the best!!'
I genuinely believe what I have written above so please don't belittle my uninformed, biased and mentalist ramblings.
I would also like to add 'lolzzzz'

Just from that list it would be:
Hobbs > Hutton > Herb > Gavaskar > Greenidge/Hayden > rest.
Hobbs > Hutton > Herb > Gavaskar > Greenidge/Hayden > rest.

Had a double take there. Not even LLL could think that Matt Elliot was better than Sunny.

Hard to go past Hobbs but Sutcliffe had a remarkable record statistically.

Re: Opening Batsmen
It's no suprise Hobbs is dominating this poll. He's a lay down misere.
I agree that Barry Richards could have been better than Hobbs if given the chance. As it stands I'd still pick him alongside Hobbs in an All-time World XI.
As for Trumper - he has no place in an all-time openers thread. He was a decent and serviceable opener, but had much greater success down the order.
Cheers.

Btw, as a kid I loved watching Roy Fredericks bat. What made him more interesting was that inbetween all those magnificent hooks and pulls I spent many an hour trying to fathom out whether or not he had an unfeasibly large head or was wearing an ill-fitting cap.
Happy days.

My borther played against the Windies for NSW Country and he reckons Fredericks has an unfeasibly large cock . . . he said that when they went into the changing rooms for a beer, Frederricks was just getting out of the shower, and my brother said that all they could see was a massive cock with a little man growing off it . . . (or that's his favourite story anyway)
