When he played for England I really liked his coolness and temperament. I remember thinking that he'd be better suited to Test cricket than ODIs because his shots are all about timing rather than power. I think he could be a brilliant middle order accumulator in the future.
Didn't grab his chance in the Lions game though...
Meanwhile Jonah completes his 10th over in a row.

He may be far from perfect as a wicketkeeper, but Matt Prior is by FAR the best batsman out of all the 'keepers in England.

Scott Newman goes for 91. Scored 84 in the first innings.
Just the 11 hundreds and 33 fifties in his FC career average of 42 (which I believe is around about one the top ten averages of current English players) - I think I can see where his problem is.
How can you get in so often - seeing off the new ball, no less - without cashing in? Needs a kick up the arse. Or in the head.
Has the talent to be really top notch. But he's not.
Frustrating.

His attitude to his fielding creeps through into his batting it seems.

Stirring up old memories is it JK?
In the words of the prophet "tough shoite!"
No county in its right mind is going to "fix" a pitch nowadays, the points deduction is too punitive. Anyway, what do you want - every match to be played on bland batsman-friendly surfaces, which moderate county players can survive on with their eyes shut?
Ravi Bop did ok - the sign of a good player. Next cab off the rank probably.

Re: English county season 2008 (II)
Fringe English batsman so far this season:
Key's average is massively boosted by 178 not out against NZ. He's not done much since. But we don't really need an opener at the moment. Of the three middle order contenders, Ravi looks like the man. Especially as he's taken 14 wickets at 26 as well!
- Code:
Michael Carberry: 6 matches, 9 innings, 226 runs @ 25. Centuries 0. HC 0.
Bobert Key: 5 matches, 8 innings, 409 runs @ 58. Centuries 1. HC 1.
Owais Shah: 6 matches, 10 innings, 387 runs @ 38. Centuries 1. HC 3.
Mark Ramprakash: 6 matches, 10 innings, 398 runs @ 44. Centuries 2. HC 0.
Ravi Bopara: 7 matches, 12 innings, 608 runs @ 55. Centuries 2. HC 4.

Ramprakash seems to be proving to the world that he truly lacks the bottle when it comes to the crunch.

Hardly a shock. He's been proving it for 18 years now.

Yeah, but there were people licking his rear saying that he now had enough interests away from cricket to keep him calm out at the crease.
(And that he should be playing for England).

Re: English county season 2008 (II)
I think it's too easy to resort to "sh*ts himself under pressure" jibes. Far too easy. He's 38 and hasn't scored a century for 3 games. It doesn't automatically mean he's a pussy. He could have lost concentration, or received good balls, or be going through a poor trot, or his age could be catching up with him or a million other things. People seem to need to find a central theme to a player's career and then bring it up whenever they can manipulate circumstances to reflect that theme.
