Re: Euro 2008 Thread
Pixie is taipan. He has lots of ids and cyber girlfriends.
I haven't really "debated" the issue with pixie/taipan. It's difficult to have a debate with a moron. Particularly one who only replies with one-line rubbish.
You either get a student loan, which must be paid back once you start earning a certain amount, or your parents pay. Most people have a combination of the two. The poorest get government grants.
He was tracking back to the right back position. It was the right back's duty to block the cross. If not the right back then the defensive midfielder. Ballack is neither.

No I just said you were bigging up Carberry having never seen him play. At no time did I suggest that you were blinded by the fact you have Michael Carberry posters on your bedroom wall...
Completely the opposite of super Fwank - obviously
I wasn't "bigging him up" as such. I was saying he could be the next cab off the rank because of his impressive performances. Didn't stop you from posting - is Carberry the new Fwank. Go and check the thread if you don't believe me.

If I knew where to look I would. Actually I vaguely remember taunting you with something like that. But it was hardly in the 'Your mother was a hamster' class....
And i'm sure it was fully deserved.

I've always wondered what was wrong with smelling of elderberries. I can think of far worse things that one could smell like.

Our student loan system was called HECS (Higher Educaton Contribution Scheme) in my day, but now I understand it's called something else. And yes, we either paid upfront, or deductions are made from your salary once it hits a certain figure. But my point is, in Australia this is all funded and subsidised by the government. We paid a fraction of the amount, the rest of it is funded and god-forbid by ordinary tax-payers. Surely the UK system does not require the student to pay the full 100% cost of university education?
I met this American Biology college student who wanted to go on and complete medicine, and he said it would cost his parents $300K for him to become a Doctor. I don't know if he's talking out of his arse, but WTF, how can anyone afford that? You'd be paying off the loan for the rest of your life.
Yeah but if Ballack was all over the shop, as you say, and with Frings the normal DMF out injured. Whose responsibility was it then? But let's leave it at that.

your education is subsidised by the government. i had to pay £13,000 a year as tuitions in uni, the brits paid £1,000 and that too mostly covered by grants or loans

Yeah, I had to pay about £1,100 or something - f*ck all in the scheme of things. Relatively speaking, I got f*cked over though - my predecessors paid nothing and got a grant too. My student loans company have been pummelling me up the shitter since 2003. Different sanctions are now in place to stop them being twats, doesn't help me though. But as I say, compared to some I'm very lucky.

I don't think that's true. It's not that our fee is subsidised and that the proper price should be £13,000. It's just that foreign students pay well over the odds because otherwise English universities would have more foreign students than British. And also because Universities with worldwide reputations fleece foreign students for as much as they possibly can.
As pearlj says - since top up fees, it's £3,000.

Re: Euro 2008 Thread
They have big arguments about this sort of thing on The Student Room (collection of self-righteous yuppies who have wrist-slitting parties if they're rejected by Oxbridge) and it usually seems to end with someone telling everyone else that yes, fees are subsidised and that is why, henceforth from the beginning of time, Universities are trying to push fees up and up until they're getting as much money as possible. I can't prove that they're right; probably someone on there proved it at some point, but I don't go there any more.
It's £3145 per year from next year. I don't know why some students get so uppity about it - if you end up on the street you don't even pay it back.

Re: Euro 2008 Thread
Turkey have come back from the dead for the third time in as many games.
After conceding a goal to Croatia in the 2nd half of extra time, they equalise a minute later, and then win on penalties. You would think that with a few minutes to go, the Croatian coach would have had every man and his dog behind the ball....
Germany must not be complacent in the Semi, as this is a dangerous opponent. The did win well though against the Turks in the 2002 World Cup Semi.
I'm still flabbegasted that Turkey won today. It is almost fate that Turkey keep winning. Is it reminiscent of Greece four years ago?

What an ending!
Must be amazing to be a Turkish fan this tournament.
Also, it looks like we might actually be able to beat Croatia in a penalty shoot out. Can't ever recall us missing the target with 2 out of the first 3!

They were screwed by the referee. They had a substitute ready to go, the fourth official was standing there on the sideline ready to wave him on, there was a natural break in play as Croatia had just been caught offside.
For some reason, the referee chose to ignore the substitution, Turkey punted the ball up field and scored with the last kick of the game.
That's why Bilic was doing his nut.

Can understanding him losing his temper at the moment Turkey scored but he's taken it really well from that interview. He's becoming my favourite manager, bit of a legend really.
Bilic for England!

Re: Euro 2008 Thread
He's a cool guy. He'll probably be a great club manager when the time comes to leave Croatia. I can see him working in Italy or Spain for one of the big clubs.
Re: Euro 2008 Thread
Yup, seems a decent guy and a really good manager. He is going to be hot property when he leaves Croatia.
He reminds me of Mourinho except not such an ass.
Plus how unlucky were Croatia. The ref completely screwed them.

Turkey sure as hell aren't as dour. They score goals. And have terrible luck with injuries and suspension.
Hiddink magic on show again today. But yeah, the Dutch will be too strong for them. Should be a good open game as both sides attack well.
Germany. They keep getting the wins when required. Also Pontoon, the team may or may not have been good the last so many years, but there's no denying they've been playing some good football since Klinsmann took over.

Re: Euro 2008 Thread
Ash - there are rumours that Sammy Eto'o has passed a medical at Arsenal. Gutted that Barca are letting one of the very best strikers in the world leave but if he can't be at Barca, I'd love to see him at the Emirates. I reckon he'll tear up the premiership with his pace (though he seems a touch slower after a series of serious injuries).
Also, where's Makaveli? I want his reaction to Ronaldo wanting to leave.
I wonder if Fergie will actually follow through on his threat to drop Ronaldo to the reserves rather than sell him to a European rival?

Not a chance, in my humble opinion. This looks like the only banker of all the quarter finals, though I would love to see it unfold otherwise...

With Adebayor going the other way.
Ronaldo is going. Just depends how much we can get for him. I want £80m plus Sneijder.

Russia are looking pretty dangerous. Van Der Sar's just made two great saves. I reckon all the Russians are pepped up on anabolic steroids like Ivan Drago in Rocky 4. Holland need a montage and they need it now.
