Team of the tournament:
--------Villa---------Torres--------
---------------Deco-----------------
------Iniesta----------Xavi---------
----------------Senna--------------
Zhirkov--Chiellini---Puyol----Ramos
----------------Casillas--------------
Pretty straightforward. Maybe Marchena instead of Puyol who had a few classic Puyol clumsy moments.
Alternative XI:
---------Arshavin-------Pavluuchenko-----
----Altintop---Ballack---Rakitic----Sneijder---
Capdevila----Marchena---Pepe-----Anyukov
----------------------Buffon--------------------
Daniele De Rossi (what a great player) unlucky to miss out as are one or two others.

Not taking anything away from Spain who were clearly the best team in the final and the tournament, but FFS, Lehmann really should have stayed on his line. Tough decision and 50-50 whether to come out or not, but from that distance I reckon the likes of Buffon or Casillas would have narrowed the angle but would not have gne out to meet the ball.
i dont know who to blame more for that - lehmann or lahm. there was no way torres should have beaten lahm to that ball if lahm had not backed off way too early
at the end the better team won, so cant really complain. but i still wish it was germany

its funny how germany's goalkeeper's have screwed up in two consecutive finals - 2002 & 2008. kahn fumbled in yokohama to give ronaldo the first and lehmann now in vienna

Kahn actually has a lot of howlers to his name in big Champion's league matches too.
Still one of ESPN commentators said at the time of Torres goal that Alumina the Spanish keeper who is keeping Lehmann on the bench at Arsenal couldn't even make the Spanish squad.

Torres didn't really have a great tournament. He was only redeemed by his goal in the final. Arshavin is more deserving of a place in the tournament's best team.

Neither did the big game god, Ballack.
That is just a ghastly sick joke to include him.

Agreed. Arshavin's creativity plus his ability to score puts him ahead of Torres who get's everything handed to him on a plate by his midfield.

Re: Euro 2008 Thread
doremi, what the hell did Ballack do apart for that free kick?
Don't see why people rate him so high, he's a good player he WAS a very very good player when he was Bayern but after joining Chelsea he's declined a lot, i'd take Lamapard over the current day Ballack.

Ballack is the first name that pops up when I think complete midfielder. He had a few good games this tournament. But yeah, maybe a rethink, and an edit.

Iniesta is so good you named him twice!

Re: Euro 2008 Thread
Torres doesn't just score goals, he's also very hard working and a selfless runner into the channels (as seen in Liverpool's 8-1-1 formation). It was Torres pace and strength running into the channels that created the goals for Villa in the first Russia match and caused much havoc.
Didn't see as much of the tournament as I would of liked, so will refrain from naming an XI, but the performances of players such as Arshavin, Torres, Villa, infact pretty much the whole Spanish midfield, Zhirkov, Schweinsteiger, Nihat was a joy to behold.

Yeah, my first draft actually had Ronaldo in there. Cesc would have been there as well if he wasn't a sub all the time.

Re: Euro 2008 Thread
Ballack is so efficient with the ball, he rarely makes a bad pass and is a real danger anywhere near the goal with both feet and in the air. So very, very, German. No flash skills but mighty effective. Vorsprung durch Technik.
